The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Stoves are awesome. Although we have a gas stove top and our chimney collapsed last year so we can't use our inside fireplace. All we have is a heater thingy. I'm still cold.

My ducks came out today for a bit and two or three of the chickens followed them but stayed out less than 5 minutes. The chicken stair tunnel is clear of snow and it lets out into a covered run area with grass and of course some mud now. I have tried all kinds of things, treats, even chasing them out but nope they love the coop. I'm hoping they will leave the coop this weekend.

Maybe they just like their coop so much that they find no reason to leave. Be they have a big screen tv and cable hidden in there somewhere

I think it is the extra warmth. The roof is the semi see through blue corrugated roofing. The coop stays a bit warmer than outside. Then we also have a heat light on the water for now. I'm thinking of replacing the heat light and using a heated bowl to make sure there is water in the coop. Until I see them going outside again, I just can't not have water in the coop. I'm a softy when it comes to water and food.

She is beautiful! Is she starting to lay or starting to show signs of almost laying?

I think she will lay before 30 weeks. Fingers crossed.

Hi everyone! It's been about 100 years since I was here last! I hope everyone is doing well and that everyone is looking forward to a nice Christmas. I've been following Justine and Leigh on Facebook but just haven't gotten back over here!

Thought I'd share my early Christmas presents: They are getting along swimmingly with the chickens, and they sleep under the chicken coop (completely ignoring the nice shelter my husband built for them!)


Albus (the white one) and Minerva!

We lost a Mama Hen back in October (anyone remember my mean "Nanny" hen? She went broody and hatched 4) to a hawk, we also lost 2 chicks at the same time. So we have 2 left and the exciting thing was, they were "our" chicks; our rooster+our hens. Yay! They're mutts of course but still exciting.







We also added 2 Mini Rex rabbits (my daughter hopes to sell the offspring to help finance her school senior trip to D.C.)
