The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I couldn't see his mama.. :( They aren't supposed to leave them until the following spring. I'm wondering if she was shot or hit by a car.

Is there a way to kind of keep an eye on him or make sure he has food available until you can find out or, if something has happened to her, until he can be on his own. Or is that really dangerous?

We were in elk camp one year and a cow moose came jogging thru camp....a few minutes later a calf came running thru camp, bawling, headed in the same direction. 1/2 hour later, here comes the cow again and a few minutes later the bawling calf. She was weaning. Breeding season is in the fall so she didn't want her calf around anymore. Sad to see but that's what they do.

He took off. He was eating the trees, so I am assuming he is weaned. he looked nice and healthy to me. Very quiet.

Aww lol Sounds like goats!

It is safe to eat the hen still right? The prolapse is very very bad (large). We tried to get it to go back in and it just would not stay in for any time at all.
It is twice as bad since the weather is super cold and processing will be a pain. We will be skinning.

Yes she is safe to eat. That is one of the big problems w/ prolapse they keep laying so no time to heal and strengthen that area to keep it from happening again. Especially w/ the really large prolapse.

In your kind of ridiculous cold I'd kill in the garage and process in the kitchen. (I do that all the time all year round anyway b/c of neighbors.)
