The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hey everyone, I have an inexplicable problem. I went out to the coop to check on everyone today, I have this barnevelder that is POL an feels the entire world needs to know everytime she steps into a nest box. (Usually on top of everyone else) anyway I open the door am the wall behind the top roost bar is splattered in blood! Like someone did it with a toothbrush. And there are drips down the wall. I checked everyone and can't find any trace of blood on anyone. The only explanation I can think of is the cold gave someone a nose (beak?) bleed. And the sneezed blood on the wall. Any suggestions? Am I missing something potentially life threatening?

On a different note... I just candled my Rhodebar eggs that I set 8 days ago... Every one of them is viable and growing! Yeah! Let hatching season begin

My rooster that had a comb injury from the other rooster, made a scene like you are describing in his recovery pen. A different rooster lost a spur trying to attack DH's shadow. He ended up spuring a pine tree and falling down minus a spur. He lost blood in drips for a few days. THat first night it looked like a lot and I kept finding murder scenes where ever that rooster sat still. We finally got to him and attended to his wound with flour and cornstarch.
Combs, spurs, wattles, are ear lobes all bleed much more than I would have thought. Just some areas to check. It is most likely a small wound from a pecking order adjustment if you don't have roosters.

OR it might be part of the frostbite healing process as well.

I had the same thing happen earlier this winter. Blood everywhere, and not a sign on any chicken of any injury. Nothing ever showed up!

I had the same sort of thing a couple weeks ago, turned out that one of my Brahmas was pulling out foot feathers. With them in molt, I assume it's the irritation, and it quit within a few days of her pulling out all the old feathers and the new pinfeathers unfurling. I would never have know if I didn't catch her mid pulling when I took out some treats. Hope you figure it out!

it was only -4 this morning and.......it is now 15 degrees!!!! I get to turn off the heat lamps.

with the lights from the heat lamps, everyone is convinced spring is here. Both roosters are mating, there has been a lot of traffic in the nest boxes, although still only 5-6 laying out of 16 hens.

This will be the first night without extra light, so hope it doesn't confuse the heck out of everyone.
