The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Sprouting is easier than fodder.  Pumps are not required for fodder unless you're growing a huge amount.  How many chickens are you feeding?  I grow my sprouts in a 1 qt canning jar with a screen cut to fit inside the jar ring.  Soak the seeds for a few hours, then rinse twice a day.  It can't get any easier than that!   And they love them.  I grow a mix of BOSS, lentils, wheat, and barley.  It takes 3 - 5 days, depending on how big you want the sprouts to get.

Trying the jar tonight.  I just put some old grass seed in the jar to soak.  I'm hoping for sprouts in a week or less.

Op ooh I am going to try this way tonight. I was headed to the basement anyways and I think cheese cloth would work since I can't remember where the extra screening is.

LM I'm sorry I knew someone posted on it somewhere.......did I mention I am horrible at remembering who said what? I blame it on being blonde :)

ETA I did remember to grab veggies out of the freezer........

Quote: It sounds like a fun thing to join in on. I would need the free link again though. maybe in the first post of each chapter thread so I can find it easily.

Good point. Should only use "untreated" seed.
it is untreated or at least that is what I was told when I picked it up a long time a go from a local grain and seed place.

veggies, herbs ~ garlic is a favorite one on this thread, berry bushes ~ red raspberry leaves make for a healthy tea for humans so double benefits, apples are controversial but my chickens love them, cabbage, pumpkins, red clover, alfalfa, dandelions, peas, corn, sunflowers,... I know there are lots more too these are just the ones I remember being posted about.

My mom we went picking blackberries over the summer nextdoor she picked some leaves and uses them in her over the winter

Guess I have to wait till tomorrow.

Well after I forgot again I finally brought a jar upstairs & put I'm some of my grain I use to feed the girls in it with some water to soak. How long do you soak them? And then after they soak, you drain them, shake them and let them sit in the jar? Do they have to sit in a window?

What is with running out? I have not given many and not sure how it really works?

I think people get a daily quota. When you give a thumbs up the recipient gets "reputation" points. I think the more thumbs up you give, the more points your thumbs up are worth ... but that's not something I've been able to prove.

Running out is a nice thing, but frustrating if you're finding too many posts you want to reward in one day.
