The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I also saw that they are selling a kind of band that I've never seen before. Again, more info and photos in the catalog, but these snap shut. You "squeeze" them in the middle to open them. Not sure if they're any good or not, but thought I'd put it out there for anyone interested.

Thanks Scott H and Armorfirelady, I checked her all over and didn't see anything on her skin or on the base of her feathers. The bottom of her tail doesn't have any feathers, but the skin is clear and pink. (I think she's molting). These are my first chickens so I don't have a lot of experience, but I've been researching chickens and chicken care for over a year. I do have 20 years of experience as a nurse for people though.

Will keep surfing the site, including the diseases/injuries thread, mix up some eggs garlic and oregano (out of basil) and hope for the best.

Edited to add: No scratching noted.
sounds like egg problems. A good soak in warm water sometimes helps.
I see in later reading this has been resolved.

This is my opinion

I have only one way to repair prolaps. A sharp knife.
Prolaps is generally a genetic issue and is repeated, The hen can go through horrible pain and infection with out you knowing about it until you find a dead bird. If you do not do autopsy's, you will not even know that either. Culling out birds with pinched tails or birds that are poor layers or unthrifty birds will give you healthy birds for generations.

Quote: Good luck..

Quote: They should hatch at day 21 or day 22. A few may hatch after and up to day 25 if you have opened the box often.
I would toss out all of those eggs and try again..I am going to assume you do not have your incubator working correctly...

Do you have a good thermometer besides the one that comes with the incubator? Calibrated?
Do you have a hygrometer that has been calibrated correctly?
What temp are you using? Humidity?

What other fruits are you going  to plant?

Thanks! And ...

We are in the nursery business, so have access to ... everything. Lots of it for "free." I'm going to plant some persimmons, figs, pawpaw, mulberries, kiwi, any Oregon native that fruits, chestnuts, maybe some hazelnuts ... And normal stuff like more plums, peaches, pears. I'm working with a really cool business friend to "curate" an awesome collection. He goes around the world gathering trees to cultivate for our area.

I know that's not fair, but ... :p

Just sew the burlap in the shape of a pillow case, I double sew the seams.  I use a pretty wide zigzag stitch and sew the two long seams, then turn the back inside out and sew the seam again catching the seam allowance in the new stitched seam, helps to prevent unraveling.

I understand the sewing part.
I don't know how to do the sprouting part.
