Just a comment on this...
The fat content of the food is not the issue. It is the carbohydrates.

Problem is that what we feed chickens now-a-days is very high carbs...which is really the only thing they could live without unfortunately.

Increase ANIMAL/INSECT protien
Decrease carbohydrates (grains/legumes)

Ok....off my soapbox.

And what Aoxa said about different specific animals is very true. They metabolize their feed quite differently just like humans do.

Good point. I have heard a lot about BOSS causing fatty liver in birds if fed too much.

Too many grains make us fat as well.

How do you know they pecked him to death? Could he have died for some other reason and they pecked him because he was dead? I'm not trying to be contrary - I really want to know.

I can't know that for sure; I wasn't there and I don't have any kind of camera in my coop. So, yes, it is an assumption, but not far fetched, I don't think, considering the behavior and actions of the rooster and Sandy.
The only other reason he could have died would be if a predator of some kind got into the coop and he was the only one brave enough to fight it.
There were no signs of illness at all, so I have no reason to believe that he died of natural causes and then the pecked a hole in him.

I wish I could add advise for mean chickens..I have been breeding for so many years for temperament I do not have issues with injury except with fenced in males. They will fight with each other through the breeding fence..as soon as breeding season is over and they are all let loose, I do not have fighting. I do have a hen who will kill other young birds and chicks when they get too close to her own. Only one. She will try to kill me too when she has young. Other than that she is sweet as pie. I tolerate a mean hen when she is protecting her chicks. I need that in my line a bit more. Most of my broodys are good feeders to chicks, but lack aggression to attack other animals when chicks are approached. One of my hens will even let the dog approach chicks. I dislike that more.

Many people eat and hunt raccoon..and possum and all kinds of meat that others do not. Why do you think there are tons of hound dogs specifically bred to hunt them? Some cultures think of them as a delicacy and prize the fur.
The first edition of The Joy of Cooking, released in 1931, contained a recipe for preparing raccoon.
Calvin Coolidge was sent a live Raccoon for Thanksgiving dinner..she later was named Rebecca and was his pet in the White House.

Fine dinning restaurants do serve it and it is expensive. You can't find it for under $7-10 a lbs. More than beef.

BTW..I have never eaten it ..I would try it..I have tried many odd things to see how they tasted..even porpoise.
