The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I think it might make it to zero today!! On a sad note my chicks have not made it to the sorting office yet..the made it to cleveland mon night and tracking disappeared. I will be suprised if any make it
I order a lot of stuff online-- on occasion shipping is not updated on the sites and it just shows up at your door....hopefully this is the case

So sorry. Yes, the postal system is frustrating. I think I pay a bit extra for the privilege, but get my chicks from local hardware store via M Mc. They are overnight shipped, so arrive in bulk numbers much faster than they would if I were ordering them directly to my p.o. It's especially nice that I know in advance that I can go to the store at 7:30 AM the day of arrival, and they'll be there for me!

Sally, do you use a different incubator for lock down?
yes, I use my 1588 for the first 18/19 days and then a still air 9200 for the last 3/4 days. I have had the best results that way. I had tried using 1 incubator for the entire hatch but my still airs don't do well for ME for the first 18 days.

Meyer did ok during the warm and sometimes hot weather last year for me. And some times the USPS just neglects to update tracking.
Right now I am waiting on a shipment myself from Ideal. I like their duck prices compared to Meyer's. And shipping is very reasonable with Ideal too as they must include part of the shipping fee in their chick / duckling price. My orders have been mainly for the specials though so 25 chicks or more. I'm sure that helps the chicks stay warm too.

Editing to add that Ideal has some great specials today. Bantam chicks for under $1.

Haven't they increased shipping costs for chicks and hatching eggs there recently as well? You'd think service would improve if their rates went up.. I like DHL for shipping. I wonder if they do chicks...
