The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thank you Pozees!

When I was doing her "hair" yesterday I came back in that second time to see if we had anything that had protected tips or was at least a little less pointy than the ones I had. I found some that were a bit better but I had thought I'd go look for something more suitable to have on hand so I appreciate your link.

Now - do you have any photos of any birds you've trimmed crests on? I'd like to see how you did yours.

One of the juvenile Silkies I posted pics of the other day is the one I trimmed, you can't really tell, I just got the feathers from around and below her eyes. Well I shouldn't say you can't tell, you can tell most of the beard and cheek fathers are missing, and you can see how uneven it looks LOL - but I didn't take anything off the top because she only goes out in a chain-link run with chain-link roof.

What do you think about vent sexing?
How would/do you sex chicks?
vent sexing takes years to perfect I think... as for sexing chicks, I don't. time and patience will tell you what you've got... some breeds you can tell earlier than others, like dorkings, roos have a black breast pullets red, but other breeds where both sexes are alike, some just take longer than others. bantam cochins, the roos usually have a decent comb by 2-3 weeks old, while Swedish flower hens have me guessing well beyond 12 weeks old sometimes.

Thanks again. Those little white girl's crests make me think of a dandelion top when it's ready to blow away in the wind.

I didn't know that sexing was so complicated!!!
I've got barnyarders, really. The roo is GLW x white Leghorn and the hens are hatchery white Leghorns (well, three of the eggs are from my gold Comets, and apparently some of those aren't just BO hen X RIR roo, someone told me that their eggs are so dark that there must be Maran or something in them.)
Sorry; I'm having coffee today. lol

Suffice to say, I guess I shouldn't hold my breath for 8 pullets then, huh?

Oprah during her molt.....

Oprah now....

Juanita was terribly proud of her poopy butt. Out of 10 pictures I think she showed it off 9 times.....

They're beautiful.
I like how you got them to line up like that in the third pic!!! lol
Yes, poopy butts are for showing off. Didn't you know that, Scott????
