The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

somewhere buried deep in this thread are a bunch of ways I put up to deter hawks. They all don't hurt... but help? Not if the hawk is hungry enough.

The best thing I have found is having crows and ravens around. They harass the hawks for me.

some of the hawk annoyances

Fly the American flag. The flapping in the wind seems to keep them away
Scarecrow, moved daily and leave a radio on with talk radio playing
IF they are legal in your state, fire off fireworks

I am getting a good group of crows around. Last week I saw 3 go head-on with a hawk and one actually bumped it mid-air and sent it slightly spinning sideways.

Those crows are definitely part of the thoughts.

I've wondered if I could somehow build housing or something that would attract them and encourage them to stay here. Sometime I see them and other times not so much.

I have things running around in my mind that I'm going to try. I guess I can report back if any of them seem to work well.

In the meantime I'll post this link: http://icwdm.org/handbook/birds/HawksOwls.asp
I think this has been posted before but there are some things for "frightening" down in that article somewhere.

I have no idea what attracts the crows and ravens here. Always wondered if they thought the Black Sumatra's were a funny looking crow

Leah's mom I wonder if you can get crows or ravens to roost like homing pigeons?? I believe I have read they make their nests in pine trees. It seems the ones around here are always in my neighbors trees.
