The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

That snow missed us. They were calling for a foot..we had a dusting. I was delighted. I do not want to shovel anymore this year. Please no more now..
I am so sorry LaLa..in July you will get your revenge.

Put up fencing today and making room for chicks to come out. I have 100 of them in my house and I am going bonkers. Too cold to ship so I just have them...The feed bill should be scary in about 2 months.

Well today Sophie told me several times she is not happy with her seclusion. Little snot ran out the pop door when I was trying to let Lucy out so she could eat. I caught Sophie just as she made it to the food bowl. Back in she went. She complained all day loudly whenever I went out.........I grabbed Lucy before work & threw he back in with Sophie for the night. My mom is stopping over later to make them eggs to eat. It will 24 hours with no food for Sophie so I am curious to see how much she eats. I know she is hungry so I am guessing she will eat most of the eggs.

Remember Lucy's toes got frostbite? Well today when grabbing her in the rain I looked down to see if my coat was muddy & thought her toes were cut off. I looked closer and it seems the nails on those 2 toes fell out. She is walking just fine tho. I wouldn't of even noticed had I not looked down since her feet are black and they have been trasping thru the mud for days. I will just keep a better eye on them. Apparently the mud has not hurt them. Her feet were cool to the touch & the tips a pale white but its really not noticeable with her black feet.

I was wondering, Delisha. Glad it missed you but sorry for the cold weather keeping you from shipping the chicks! I can't imagine 100 chicks. are you having any pasty butt or all they all just happy campers?

sounds like Sophie is doing ok! I've had chickens do that kind of funky swallowing thing, but it always seems to be sporadic and it passes in a couple of days. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and Sophie.

and it stopped snowing! Sun is peeking out, it is starting to drip off the roof. I shoveled the roof off the run for the small coop and booted a broody sulmtaler out into the run. Locked em all out of the coop, it is 32 and rising.....I can hear spring birds so...

At least your participles aren't dangling.  (That could be embarrassing.)

Ohhhh... I wanted to say something smart about welfare "e's" and hanging chads, but... I think I'll go back to lurking. ;-)

I'm certainly hoping it will pass. She was quite ornery this morning & I took that as a positive sign. I am curious to hear how she liked the eggs my mom should be giving her soon.

And I am glad to hear it stopped snowing
