The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Nope no one is acting sick! And intestinal lining was my first thought but I wanted a second opinion. I've been using Molly's Herbal Wormer since March. Thanks LM!!

I thought intestinal lining too. It's not overly bright like fresh blood. I hope your chicken is still doing well!

Anyone have any idea how to comfort a single chick...i had that one hatch by Suprise after a lot of dud's left it for 24 hrs in the Hatcher I had it on just didn't get the egg moved ,so moved it in to dry etc....nobody close to the same age/size all are 3 week older..I have never had this happen before as I have always had some other due within a couple days or some within a week of age..I gave it a soft washcloth and a rubber ducky it's size ,seemed to help it's crying .no it not cold or hot etc just lonely..I have those Broodies but seeing they killed a chick just the other day I don't want to risk this one as i won't have a chance for any more..if they manage to hatch one of those eggs I gave them should I steal a chick so it has company?

ON a happier note I have the weirdest nursery pen ever.. 2 turkey Poults 3 weeks, 2 sizzles 4 weeks, 3- 7 week old nz mix breed rabbits that turned out jack rabbit colored so freezer bound.they all were eating each others food and playing ...

I've never had this situation but I know of others who have put stuffed animals in with the chick and a mirror so that they can see a chick in the mirror. If the broodies hatch chicks perhaps you could stick your single chick under the broodie at night & see if she will accept it? I have heard of others who have done this with success

they are first time mom's they had one hatch i gave them the other day and killed it either on purpose or by accident etc..this chick is a wheaten maran my roo died last month so i really don't want to risk it. .. seems content enough it is in a guinea pig type cage if it is warm again i could put it's cage in the nursery area during the day do it is not lonely

Have had a few single chicks for various reasons. I hang a feather duster so they can get under it like a mama. It works well

Indiana Chickenfest was this past weekend. 24 hours before I had no plans to bring home anymore chickens. HA!! Let's just say I have no self control! I am so excited to have 2 breeds I really wanted! We also have plans to add a Legbar roo in the near future. And then at the end of August/beginning of Sept. three Silkies (and it is possible those may end up waiting til next spring). . . then we are done til next Spring - REALLY!

So here are our new babies - and they really seem like babies compared to our 12 weekers! What a difference a few weeks make!

This is Cordelia - DD is reading Anne of Green Gables, if you are familiar you know where the name came from:

And here is Rapunzel:

I can't believe how in ridiculously in love with Chickens I am! And after 10 years I actually have a hobby -which sound really pathetic but raising kids, homeschooling, getting into a more natural way of living really was all I had time for!

Misbhavin: I'd steal a chick from one of your broodies to put with your hatcher chick. Since the broodies have a marred track record, and you want to be sure this chick does well, better to steal a chick from a broody, than to try to foster this chick into a broody clutch. what ever you decide to do, it's your choice, and there is no wrong answer here!!! Good luck!

so give him a couple of the smaller 3 week-ers, and he'll be running around with them in no time. I combine ages up to 3 weeks apart all the time.
