The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

They come with a key to open them. If you order some TIE A PIECE OF WIRE TO THE KEY AND TIE THE OTHER END TO A STICK OF FIREWOOD SPRAY PAINTED ORANGE. Or else you will have to use a screw driver to pry them open at risk of stabbing yourself and getting rat guts in the wound. It is nice that they have a locking feature, (it's just a cheezy little plastic tab, but there are two of them) you can put them right in the coop.

Hahahaha....that's really good advice as I've lost anything that could possibly be lost that I just knew I wouldn't lose and would remember where I put it.

So...do you think using bacon grease or anything similar will actually attract rats into a barn that they aren't currently inhabiting?

Do chipmunk's have the same taste?

No, I don't think you can pull them more than a couple feet from where they are planning to go anyway.

I've never tried either, so I don't know. If you mean do they like the same food, chipmunks are more into nuts and seeds, and less interested in meat and fat.

Do you use any special bait on them? Also, what bait attracts rats, chipmunks and mice?

I keep wondering if those liquid baits that you squirt on traps would attract rats that you don't already have!

don't know about chipmunks but mice and rats love peanut butter best. And you can smear it thin & on a wide area and make they get into right place for snapping!I show no mercy - I had 2 broody hens bled out at the neck by rats grrr!

crazy hen started out with 30 eggs under her for her first time, scary part is the others all wanting to do it now, even the roosters are hiding lol, only one brave enough to stay with her is the drake

Did you see evidence of the rats in your building - or even see the rats themselves? So far I haven't seen anything in the barn but it is not secure like the chicken shed is. Nothing goes in the shed.

Anyhow, I'm trying to prevent before I have a problem and just wondered if I would see them if they were already there.

I personally never see the rats, if you see them than you are already infested. We only see tunnel holes and the dirt piles as well as food consumption increases rapidly.
