The neighbors dog

Looked out the window and saw a commotion. There was a giant dog and a flapping chicken by our fence. I immediately ran outside yelling with my daughter right on my heals. The big dog must have rammed the coop and 2 of my girls escaped. As soon as we got the dog off chicken 1, he ran and cornered chicken 2. The whole chicken was in his mouth. I yelled and hit and made such a ruckus I couldn't believe the dog wasn't letting go of the bird. My daughter captured chicken 1 and put her into our house while we worked on getting the other chicken away from the dog. It was horrible and we were quite shaken from the whole ordeal. When we succeeded in pulling the dog away, we went searching for the owner. After walking for about 20 minutes, we found the owner and explained what had happened. He didn't even say he was sorry, or hoped the birds would be fine..or thanks for bringing my dog to me. Grrrrr, what a nice guy! Needless to say, the birds now have a new sturdier coop, and I'm always watching out for that dog.

That must have been upsetting to you, your daughter and the chickens! Are your birds going to be ok?

I was so worried about the chickens. I found no puncture wounds or blood. There were alot of feathers in the yard and house. The girls are still laying eggs and act just as if nothing happened. So all is well, except I have seen the dog come back looking for another taste of chicken nuggets. He was unable to get to them this time! Whew!

Unfortunately the dog will keep coming back. I have had to deal with the same problem myself. My rooster helps out a great deal when he sees danger coming down the road giving his girl time to slip away.

Man was warned. Next time, lock dog in garage and call animal control or sheriff. and send a bill for the coop. Let him explain himself to the authorities.

I'm not sure that dog would leave our place... If the owner doesn't care enough to keep it home, that's his problem. I think it's very fortunate that you and your daughter didn't get bitten while trying to rescue chickens.

Report it to animal control.....or whatever passes for the in your area......that way you have the incident on record, cause it will happen again.

I would NOT report anything to the authorities. If the dog happens to be "relocated" then nobody is looking to you for answers on dogs whereabouts.

Went through the same situation unfortunately and I can say it's not a fun one at all. So sorry you and your daughter had to go through that. I do have to say that having an inconsiderate jerk of a neighbor doesn't help the situation either because it's never THEIR fault....If it makes you feel any better that it happens all the time my previous neighbor (we have moved since thank God) had a pit bull that was NEVER leashed. Now, let me say that I used to live in a "city" so yes it was the law to have your dog leashed at all times. Now it doesn't make me any better because yes I had chickens which was also illegal but my 4 pet chickens that lived in my backyard in a coop that was probably nicer then most of my neighbors houses that never made a peep and produced delicious eggs that I would give to my scum neighbors were hardly a problem when it came to comparing them to leash less dogs running around everywhere. Anyway, my chickens were roaming my back yard one day and sure enough I heard a commotion and looked outside and saw the same thing you did, dog in MY yard off a leash with one of my babies in his mouth. I ran outside in the middle of winter with now shoes or socks on and punched that dog directly in his face about 15 times until he let her go. She was ok just stunned she was motionless for about an hour after wards. so this is the best part, I'm balling my eyes out while holding my then what I thought was my lifeless pet chicken and do want to believe that those scum bags who never put clothes on other then their pajamas for weeks at a time ran inside and called their dog right behind them and didn't say a word..........I couldn't believe it. As much as I can't stand someone I would never wish anything like that on them and I certainly would be apologetic and comforting in that situation but that's just me I guess... So I then lost it and screamed at them to keep their F*$king dog on a leash at the top of my lungs while they peeked through their curtains and then they proceeded to give me the finger as their response. Needless to say I am so thankful that I now live on 4 acres on a dead end country road and the few house near by I can say I am happy to have them as my neighbors.
