Up for 24 hour auction 12+ Silver Laced Wyandotte Eggs! Starts now and ends at 1pm July 10th PST I ship Monday and Tuesdays only. Bids start at $6 Shipping is $15 I wrap each egg in bubble wrap and nestle them snugly and securely. I haven't had an egg break yet! These are great hatchers. I've hatched about 50 in the past month and I am done for the year. Fertility has been 90 to 100% and hatch rate about 80 to 90% here at the farm. They're beautiful, fluffy, and easy to look at. Great layers and don't mind being around children.

Here is an update on the purchase of Lark Rise's, 18 egg, mix batch. Hatch date was yesterday and sadly only one weak chick hatched from the batch. Upon receiving the package, found two eggs broken, even though it was wrapped securely.

I have found that a killing cone makes all of the difference. I even take them and swaddle them in a kids 3T t-shirt and duct tape to stop them from struggling, then I put them in the killing cone and sever their Jugular and let them bleed out, then I sever the cervical vertebrae.
I have only had to kill one of my poultry myself and it was because she had injured herself somehow and her innerds where hanging outside and she was dragging them. Since she was one of my Guinea and they don't let me get with in reach of them I had to shoot her. All I can say is I'm glad that I'm a good shot. I've only shot at non live targets for practice but it's a good thing I did so she didn't suffer. I can kill and process quail all day long or dispatch a chick when necessary. My 12 year old grandson and husband are in charge of killing chickens when it's time. We have a chunk of wood and an ax that does the job. They hold the chickens by their back legs and just lay their neck and head on the block and a good hard whack and it's over with. I can do the rest.

I'm the same way. I haven't had to put down any of my girls, but I shot mice running around the chicken area. I don't mind doing any of the processing, but I would rather leave the actual killing part to someone else. I think that having to put down a chick would be harder than an adult you could eat though. At least if you could eat it. The waste of life thing bothers me... There is a place around here that will process chickens for around $2 each.

Don't feel bad.I went thru 3 doz different eggs (Buff Brahma Bantams) from different sellers on flea bay and have only 2 chickens to show for it.My last batch was to hatch Monday but -0- fertility rate!
I never bought any from anyone from on here but I might try next spring. . . . . . . . . . . maybe.

Seriously... BIG difference from here and ebay.

Quote: I have only purchased eggs from buyers I did some research on. Easier to get to know people here. Feed back is helpful tool. Shipping can damage eggs such that fertility cannot be judged. I've had 1/15 develop and not hatch; and had about 75% hatch from a different seller and different breed. I love hearing about the chicks and poults that do hatch!!

Chicks are easy. just cut their heads off with a pair of scissors and it's over. It breaks my heart but it's the right thing to do. As animal owners we are responsible for not letting them suffer. I've been hatching for several years now. It's gotten to where when I know it needs to be done I just do it and get it over with instead of letting it suffer till I get my nerve up.

Sorry about your luck! It's a tough time of year for eggs with the heat, and shipping on top of it. Lark Rise's birds are definitely worth the gamble of shipping IMO though! I incubated a batch of 18 from her earlier this year and had a very satisfactory hatch rate. Better luck next time!
