Answer to question 1:
It's best to read/skim through a couple pages, if you want to know exactly what has been going on. Usually if the players have been active for a while (25+ pages) or they are getting to a climax, they won't really give time to explain and might just give you a little idea of what is happening, rather than a full explanation. Some RP creaters will have you read everything, some won't.
#2: It doesn't really matter. When i first join a RP, I'll start off with short responses. Once I know a role play is stable and interesting, I start putting more thought in to responses. That is, when I'm not being lazy..:lau
#3:
It depends on the story, role/rank, and your character's history. I'm not really sure how to answer this question exactly. :p
I couldn't have said it better. :D

okay thanks for all your help! actually.. ONE more question, do you have any tips on writing interesting role plays? I'm sure some things that work in books would be hard in rp, and vice versa.

Yes
Go outside for a couple hours, look at stuff, remember it, use thesaurus 24/7 (well.. I have to use thesaurus cuz my vocabulary is.. bleh XD always hunting down synonyms!) And just.. talk to people. I get a lot of ideas from being around family, school, The internet, you name it!
Just.do.stuff. the ideas will start coming to you. Be random. :D

yeah! thanks @PeepersMama! I enjoy writing, so it'll be a new angle to look from.
My best advice for a new RPer is:
Don't try to hard.
I know, it's tempting to make a mile long post like us RP Queens and Kings, But when starting off, start of slow, then work your way up.

Join a brand new RP.
For newbie's, joining a old RP is hard, the creators and the original people that joined have created he thread for pages and pages on end, and it's super duper hard to join in.

Looking to start a RP?Go outside, Looks at Animals, LISTEN TO MUSIC!
I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to write a RP after listening to a song!
