The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Thanks, guys. I wasn’t looking for validation - just a few pairs of friendly ears for a time. I’m not going anywhere....I stuck around after rehoming my chickens and I ain’t going anywhere now. I long ago gave up trying to figure out all the points and trophies since that isn’t why I’m here anywhere. But to get that 4 year recognition in February and then be told in July that it no longer mattered rankled.

Combine that with frustration, being over-tired, and having one of those days at home where the demands keep coming but the appreciation doesn’t seem to be there and it was a recipe that should have told me to get away from the keyboard. So if at my 5 year mark I’ve met their “criteria for the elite” with a post every 90 days, great. If not, oh well. Won’t be my doing that the system is greased for frequency of posts and not the content. I’ll do the best I can and no matter what happens the sun will still come up the next morning and the birdies will still sing. Ever feel like the world is a tuxedo and you’re a pair of brown loafers?

Now I’m going to bore you with a few pics of the girls at camp. These were all publicly posted on FB and are “shareable” so don’t fret about other kids in the shots.

I want to go to that camp! It looks like it was great fun! Unlike in the picture you posted the other day, Kendra appears to be engaged and maybe even enjoying herself a little.

:highfive:

I know! I tried giving advice on quarantining new flock members and got chewed out!

Not too long ago, someone demanded that I leave their thread. I thought I was being nice but apparently was not. That thread was about purposely incubating at too high of a temp to get only pullets to hatch. It was an experiment I was told so mind my own business. How dare I bring in poultry studies....oops!
I remember a similar incident with incubating with no water....

:barnie That one gets me too!

Then they wonder why they have a bad hatch. If you are in a very dry place, you have to add water....In a very wet place you may need to use a de humidifier in the hatching room or closet. The humidity amount is key lol.

There are a lot of poultry studies that show incubating below 25% humidity is the zone of dead chicks....I hope I was nice to them....

The newest one with hatching is the safety hole. Who came up with that?

I'm going to post here... They were fantastic....
Grand daughter looked at the platter DW put in front of her and just said thank you for the nummies...

She loved them and trew a fit when they were taken away... The whole pan is hers...
Priceless:love
They mean a lot to those of us you've helped, too. No matter what the points and the trophies and the "stuff" say, what YOU say is what counts. And the reasons why you do things the way you do, count. Rant away. Like your posts, even your rants have wisdom. Please stick around.
X’s 2!!!!

And while we're on the subject of inadvertently irritating other members (we were, right?)...

Once there were 2 members upset with each other (over something that seemed totally trivial to moi) and when I tried to make peace between them, I'm the one they ended up mad at! Crazy :gig People are funny.
And they probably walked away arm in arm to get coffee. BFFs after ganging up on you.

I just told that to the Princess, and she said, "NFC only knows your cyber alter ego." :lau
Gotta love that woman.

I've noticed that! Everyone seems to think a safety hole has to be made the moment day 21 starts! And a safety hole when there's already a pip?? :he
Even a newbie like me knows that's just plain nuts.

I saw a post recently where someone wanted to go in and poke holes in the eggs on day 19. I posted that poking a hole in an egg is a hail Mary on day 23 or 24 hours after the last chick hatched. It rarely works too.

The best thing to do is work on keeping the temperature correct in the incubator and humidity in the correct range. Humidity is not as important but so may focus so much on it

Opening up the incubator to poke holes in the eggs?

This stuff is one of the reasons for my rant the other night. Something like this gets posted. It gets a lot of “likes” and in many cases (certainly not in all) the poster has pretty good numbers on his/her profile. Therefore the information contained “must be accurate” and it gets repeated as if it were pure gold for advice. <sigh>
