Once opened a bird box that contained a nuthatch brood. When the hissing started, I leaped backwards anticipating a snake. Might very well be a predator deterrent on the part of young birds - I know it worked on me.

I had a cockatiel years ago. I also had a cat that had knocked my parakeet's cage over several times. When I brought the cockatiel into the house for the very first time, I set the cage down, and the cat jumped up to see what was in the cage. The cockatiel just glared and hissed at him, and the cat's face was a study! He was like, "oh, OK. Message received and understood." Then he left. All the years we had them, he never messed with that bird. In fact, if he walked into the room when we had the bird out of its cage, he'd turn around and slink out.

The are adorable. I had to google the hissing, there's several examples on youtube - it would make me wear gloves to handle them .

JaeG, you are so good at those close up photos - are you using a smartphone or digital camera?

I have a good camera, though I'm still working out the finer points of how to use it properly. My phone camera is good in certain situations but it's not that great quality wise.

Last feed I gave the cockatiels last night they all decided I was no longer a threat but the bringer of good things and they all just sat up and yelled at me! The yelling continued even after they'd all had their share. I can see how it would be easy to overfeed them and the way their crop is I can also see how overfilling it would cause it to sag. Quite different to my finches and bourkes. They like their food a bit hotter than my finches and bourkes too - closer to the temperature that causes crop burn so I'm paranoid about measuring the temperature correctly.

WE HAVE A BIRTHDAY TODAY!! What a blessing this little stinker has been to our family, our friends, and to all who know her! Tried to get her to sing "Happy Birthday" but as soon as I grabbed the camera she clammed up. Just before that she'd given me a most enthusiastic rendition! Oh, well, that's our Kendra!

I missed it!!!! Forum alerts seems to be sporadic. Happy belated birthday little Kendra!

I'm off to a slow start today, have to run a couple errands before getting in to work around 10am.

The news from FL regarding Hurricane Irma is disturbing. Looks like a lot of our friends down there are in for a bad one. Hoping and praying they'll be ok.

Niece Brianna (Bree) opted to sit Irma out. Wouldn't be so bad if she was up north or further inland but she's in Bonita Springs! Next time I see her I'm gonna strangle her for making us worry like this! Hope Linda is sitting on her shoulder right now - she's gonna need a guardian angel!
