I failed on fire duty last night. Only slept for 3.5 hours and woke up to no coals. I have no idea why the fires aren't burning longer. I'm setting the damper half open to slow the burn.

Half open would have me without coals as well. But since your wood isn't real dry, any more closed and it probably would go out. Are the pieces of a size you can get a lot in without a lot of air space?

Probably.
Should I be leaving the damper open more?

More open = more air = faster hotter burn.
In your case, that also means less sleep as you feed the stove

Depends on the wood, type, age and dryness.

Yes, a bit better today, thanks. My head isn't spinning ! I did do some painting the other day and assembled part of the frame.

I am glad i don't have your weather, T.
There was a local 7 year old that was treated for influenza and strep and sent home. He died. What an awful disease!
