You can get a flat tire 5 miles from home. DW got one a few weeks ago on the way to work. I think she made it more than 25 miles of the 35 mile commute. Fortunately a guy with tools in his truck (some kind of tradesman) happened by as she was jacking the car. Goes a lot faster when you happen to have an impact wrench and a 21mm socket in your truck
And we got a flat in my car last summer 10 miles from home coming back from Maine - 11 PM. I'll save you the sad tale of "24 hr AAA towing".
Many years ago, DW didn't make it 1/2 mile from home going to the rink in the morning. Screw in the tire, probably from the neighbor's construction. Fortunately I was 2 minutes behind her so she took my car while I put the mini spare on hers, she was responsible for opening the rink.
