The Old Folks Home

Dh came in early this morning. His job paid the employees early, so their families could get a jump on getting some hurricane supplies. We went grocery shopping this morning, and I stocked up on extra feed for the chickens. In the morning, Dh will take things out of the garage, and haul them out to the shed. I will rinse tarps, and lay on the garage floor, then set up cages, and pens for my chickens. I'll wait to actually move the chickens, but I will be ready, just in case.

Dd, and I got into the grocery store early enough, we got everything we wanted. We knew which things to hit first (water, pop tarts, paper goods, plastic cups, bleach, canned tuna & chicken), so in a bit, when the crowds began spilling in, we were almost done, and had the more critical stuff, before it began running out of stock. I'm currently recharging batteries. Our cars are filled with gas, and we have a couple big gas cans full.

The one thing with my truck breaking down, we don't have a vehicle that will tow our utility trailer, and we want to fill a couple more of the big propane tanks for the generator. Dh is going to ask one of the neighbors tomorrow, if they'll tow it, so he can get them filled. It's not far, so I'm sure that one of them will do it. If not, he can always take the tractor to pull it. It will be slow going, but at least it will get done.

@getaclue, prayers sent that you all dodge the bullet with the hurricane. Stay safe. Like just told DH. Yes, we can get tornadoes and blizzards, severe thunderstorms and ice events, but it's pretty much a given that Florida or the Gulf is going to see at least one hurricane a year. Before we sold the house in Sebring, it was hit three times in one year. Hurricanes really liked Sebring that year.

We were talking to one of our neighbors the other day and she asked us if we had heard the news. Naturally we said no, hadn't heard anything. She proceeded to tell us that a homeowner about 3 miles from us caught two cougars on his game camera recently. They were in a field next to his house. The area around us is bordered by four gravel roads. Our property is on the southernmost road. This happened on the northwestern corner of the square the northern road being a state black topped route.

Way too close for comfort. Dh said 'you know what this means?' Yep. Start packing again when we are away from the house. We have been letting the pups go outside through a doggy door at night if they want to. No more. They are locked in the house now at night. We're going to start setting out our game camera also.

Quite frankly, I preferred it when the MO Dept. of Conservation were lying through their teeth and telling us that there were no cougars in the state. Now they are saying, well, yessssssss there are a few. Yean, right. Black bears are also making a resurgence and I think it was last year that a young hunter accidentally shot what she thought was a deer during hunting season and it turned out to be an elk. Oops! They are repopulating elk into southern MO but this one was untagged, non microchipped and undocumented. But there aren't any wild elk in Missouri except the ones they have introduced into the southern part of the state......so they claim.

I have heard about different States claiming that dangerous predators were not in an area. It can be a real problem for livestock and people

Making progress on the quilt top.

My aunt swore she saw a cougar in northwestern PA a few years ago and no one believed her, they all thought she was crazy, there’s no cougars there so they said, but she is a big nature person and knows what she saw. And several other people had seen it in that area too I guess but not for years. But of course the environment people said people misidentify animals all the time, must have been a dog or something, but she knows it wasn’t. I guess it crossed the road right in front of her when they were driving, her husband, my uncle, was asleep at the time so didn’t see it, but she was screaming at him to wake up, did you see that!?, etc. :lau but I guess she said it leaped across the road in one leap and had a real long tail like they do. She said it was definitely a cat. It was no dog or whatever they claim it must have been lol they wrote an article about it though.

Supposedly though sometimes they can wander/pass through the area or are escaped pets but there aren’t breeding populations there? Idk. There was a cougar hit and killed on a highway in Connecticut years ago too.

I will try to find the article.

Same here Penny. I was out cutting back weeds around the coop and the sun came out. I was dressed in cargo pants and a black t-shirt and it went from the 60s to almost 80 in nothing flat. Then the humidity hit. I called it quits and headed inside.

I wanted to get the hot wire exposed though and found myself wondering if it was enough to stop a big cat.

The neighbors have a big clown of a chocolate lab. The wife takes her with her for a walk every morning where they cover something like 12 miles. The neighbor stopped her as she and CoCo went by and asked her if she was carrying a side arm. When she said no, he proceeded to tell her about his sighting. Needless to say she is packing now.

I took care of an elderly lady back in IL who was as sharp as a tack. She told me one day about seeing a 'panther' at the end of her drive way. She said people told her that she probably just saw a big black dog but she just harumphed and said she was old enough and her vision was good enough to know a black panther when she saw one.

I believed her.

About 8 years ago a cougar was shot 2-3 miles from our house. At that time MODOC was swearing on their mother's graves that it was just a lone male from Nebraska looking for territory.

The Amish see females with cubs all the time....oops.

I find it crazy that no one tends to believe people when they say these stories, especially the fish & game people. They all just dismiss these claims so fast. You would think they would research it a bit instead of being so quick to dismiss them or make people feel crazy. You would think someone had reported a Bigfoot sighting with the way they treat these people! LOL
