The Old Folks Home

I don't use self checkout. These stores make a great deal of money, and can afford to hire employees. In addition, most of the salaries are tax deductible, so it's not like the stores are bearing the full brunt of the cost of wages. One of the things that might help, is contacting the corporate offices. Voice your opinion about disagreeing with self checkout.

I forgot, they pay for the generic flonase/zyrtec/and singulair. Most of my meds come in a generic form. some like the flonase and zyrtec (cetirizine) are OTC but written by the doctor in RX form, they will pay for it. My part D medicare is Silverscript. I was surprised that they would pay for the generics. Thing is, I can find the Flonase and zyrtec on Amazon at a reasonable price. Still it's convenient going to the local pharmacy and I'm supporting local businesses when I do it.

I have seen some robot check out lines in the big town up the road.... but that is it.

Crazy....

BTW, I would rather wait WAY long than use one of the automated check out lines.... freaky things.
Agreed, they don't want to pay workers.

That's a good idea!

Our local grocery store hardly ever has more than one or two human checkout clerk. The lines are terribly long! The 4 self-checkouts are labeled, "Express," but rather than wait, people use them with full carts. It's never a long wait. The whole thing is sad. Robotizing every retail experience.

Angel, in the 5 years that I've been keeping chickens, I have learned two things. 1) chickens love to die for no apparent reason and 2) Chickens are insane. I've seen my young Fayoumi pullets be standing perfectly still, suddenly let out a squawk and jump straight up in the air high enough to hit the netting, take off running around the run, then boom, back to normal.

. . . I tend to agree with the suggestion that she got startled by what her crazy little chicken brain thought was a fire breathing dragon and either went up, or down into hiding until she thought the coast was clear.

Speaking of a self serve world. At our last HAM club meeting they asked for volunteers to help at the local flu shot clinic. I thought, OH BOY! I gets to give shots again! only to be told that no the club provides radio coverage for the drive through shot clinic that they hold at the local Fair Grounds. Seems as though you can just pull in, fill out a page, let them copy your insurance card, pull up, somebody jabs you with a needle through your open car window and off you go. It's the club's job to use radios to handle traffic flow and parking when needed. I just moaned leaned over and told my dear husband. You went through medical school and I went through nursing school to park cars.......I don't think so. If I can't give shots, I ain't gonna play! He felt the same way.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better @trumpeting_angel. Ticks must die! Is more than a motto for me, it's a way of life.

Micro, are they really considering giving shots to people through their car windows? Isn't someone supposed to keep half an eye on them for a minute or two after the injection? At the Urgent Care where I used to work, they took your blood pressure (maybe all the vitals? I can't remember) for each injection. Just to be good docs/nurses. Huh, drive-by flu shots. This is worse than self-checkout!

My girls seem to be back to normal, except for what I've decided is the nearing-POL craziness Ronott described. Lots of bawk-bawk-bawk announcements that go on for long periods of time, lots of low growly demands for treats (that also go on for a long time), scratching around in the nest box without producing any eggs, and an intensity about the pecking order that wasn't there before. I want to let them out to eat up these grasshoppers but it was quite a scare the other day.

But then, they've been funny since I brought them home as little fluffers. They're still funny, but louder!

Good luck to everyone with your allergies!

Funny thing with the whole minimum wage thing is the more it is mandatory raised the more they automate (prob would have happened anyway just accelerated it) Can't remember the state (one that jumped the minimum) but they have it on the voting ballot to limit grocery stores to only two self checkout things. Funny thing here in NY is the city is $15 for fast food minimum (all other min get $11, just fast food get $15 :hmm), the state they kept separate and is gradually going to 15 with a option to stop it. Said they didn't want to hurt upstate businesses.. (they haven't stopped it)
DW was a lead at Kmart, open the store security alarm access, delt with the safe and runs to the bank for deposits + lots of responsibilities on other stuff also , she made less than new hires to start in the Little Ceasers pizza place in that store.... CNA's make less here upstate, construction workers make less, a lot of cdl truck drivers make less...

New York has such extremes - the Big City where you need millions just to live there (I'm only exaggerating a bit!) and rural areas upstate that are like rural areas in other places: fewer jobs, long commutes, lower wages, but relief from the insanity of the cities.

Reason I was in Syracuse recently is DW got lucky and got a job in our town post office, only one person there figured someone would have already been selected. Bad news was she was told two days training either Syracuse or Albany, both two hour drives, into cities, so she made me take two days off to drive her. Was told two days rest local.... Found out two days then a additional seven. I can't help have to cover a vacation so no days off, she about quit over it scared to death having to drive into the rat race . It'll be over 2,000 miles of driving all together.
And just stupid stuff, mostly just what we call cbts, safety, work place discrimination, violence, sexual harassment, etc, carp you should be able to do on a computer much closer than two hrs away....
