The Old Folks Home

So the Princess made scones tonight from a mix. I'm eating my second one and crunch on something unusually hard. First thought was that I had broken a tooth - been there, done that. I picked 'it' out of my mouth, noted that it was blackish (dried up blueberry?) and went on with my eating. After finishing I took 'it' to brighter light and determined that it was the head and thorax of a black beetle. :sick What's worse than finding a beetle in your scone ? Finding half of a beetle in your scone.

Beer Can, do you buy specialty duck feed? It's very expensive here. I have been crushing a 500 mg. time release tablet into powder, then putting the feed into a red solo cup, adding a pinch of niacin. To mix it in, I've been pouring the feed from one solo cup, to another, back and forth. Am I correct in assuming I should probably pour the feed into his bowl, then just adding a pinch of the niacin powder on top of the feed? That way he would be sure to get more.

Now that he's starting to bond, and engage, I can spend a lot more time with him. Do you think that will be ok for now? I've looked, and have not found any of his breed, in his age range locally. They are considered an invasive species here, and routinely exterminated. I will continue to search. I have chicks. Should I try putting one or two in with him, and see what happens?
I feed the ducks same as the chickens..
Have had good luck with it.

Been there done that, Sour. Only my experience was with home grown broccoli...and a half a worm.....:sick I've never been able to grow broccoli since that incident. Oh well, extra protein is how I look at it.

Sorry I haven't dropped in. I'll catch up some time. Very busy here between gathering wood, tending garden, taking care of broodies and chicks. My drafting table arrived late yesterday and I have been enjoying that.

@bruceha2000, don't think I've got a hidden nest. Just think I've got lazy hens. Plus I'm dealing with a bunch of broodies that I'm trying to break. I took one out of the buster cage tonight and stuck another in. Sigh.

The chicks are 10 days old now and the bantams look like 3 cockerels and one ???? I've got to get pictures of them...something else to add to the to do list. I walked into the house today muttering to myself... Yeah, good Lord looked down from heaven and said that woman loves roosters. Everyone else hates them, therefore every egg her hens hatch will be male from now on!.

My husband thought it was funny. I'm not laughing.

@chickadoodles...I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that everything comes back better than you expect and nothing is wrong that can't be fixed.:hugs

Yep, God has a sense of humor

Just a bit more protein!

It is good that you did not break a tooth

Would you mind sharing some pics of your turkey?
I sure do miss mine! They were so smart and so friendly. And very protective of their owners!
Not recent pics, I'll have to take some. Do have a couple of a fawn I almost ran over hiding in a ditch, came within inches of mowing it down...
