The Old Folks Home

Al, I have a question. Because of winter conditions, you've mentioned that in Alaska, they have virtual classrooms, so kids can study, even if they can't get to school. Is it just a lesson plan, and the kids to the studying online, then take a test, or is it a virtual classroom, where the students, and teacher log in, and can interact, getting help from the teacher if needed?

Many different options.

There are Skype classes where it is very much like a traditional school, you can raise your hand, ask questions etc, and the teacher lectures.

There are ones where you go to the website and can click a button to listen to the prerecorded lesson, hit a button to take a quiz (multiple choice as well as fill in the blank and paragraph). Those often have finals that are somehow proctored through the camera on your computer.

Also some you send in your papers by email, they are graded with a bunch of notes and comments and then emailed back.

And, lots of different math websites now where you do problems, they have very good "hit this button for a short explanation, another button for a long explanation" kind of thing. And there is an algorithm at work so the problems only increase in complexity as the student gains mastery.

And even my college student doing all online has some of the above options, but also a phone number where he can call and ask for whatever help. Help with the website or tutoring type stuff. His college also did a weekly Monday zoom meeting where a class got together mostly for support to help them all succeed.

Every year there are more options out there.

Now with covid some of the public schools are doing the same. Last spring they had a tutor available by zoom several times a week for kids.

Good morning everyone. Just checking in. Been really busy this week at work and haven't had a chance to say hello. One more day to get through before the weekend!

Our governor just issued a statewide mask mandate. Our Covid numbers here have been pretty good, but are starting to rise again. Hope everyone stays safe.

Cap- I'm so glad to hear your cute little goat is doing better!

I will try to get caught up on posts this weekend. Need to start my morning chores before heading into the office. Have a great day everyone!
