The Old Folks Home

Quote: Hello to you and any other lurkers and new folks!

I'm a former sous chef, so I CAN cook pretty much anything...but I won't. I'll pretty much cook under duress or if I'm feeling whimsical. I'm tired. I need a housekeeper. I need the Brady's housekeeper. She did everything and Carol officially helped her once in a while. Seriously, how much could they possibly have paid Alice to get that kind of service....

...as usual, I digress.

Thanks to all for the encouragement! I am still smoke free and yes, Wisher it is at the odd times that the thought to have a smoke seem to pop up. My mind will say, it's time for a smoke and then I tell it, no it's not and that seems to be working. ;) I am using the patches to help quit and today I decided to try the lower dose patch (after trying a day without a patch last week that I really regretted but made it through the day without a smoke). I may be a tad grouchier than normal (and yes, I really mean a tad, I have not wanted to strangle anyone yet ;) ) I am getting through without any big issues. :weee DH is also still smoke free. :weee

Random amusing observation - My filter at work makes it impossible to search for images of "Naked Necks" and it REALLY didn't want me to research whether or not "Pussy Willow" would grow in my zone.

Ok, search alternatives, 1) Turken, and

2) Pussy willow is a name given to many of the smaller species of the genus Salix when their furry catkins are young in early spring. These species include: Goat willow or goat sallow, a small tree native to northern Europe and northwest Asia.

Filters are hilarious. I put one on our home computer years ago and then I couldn't get into any of the stuff I needed to for the Girl Scouts troop I led. It made half the things I needed seem dirty.

My kids tell me all the time they can't look up stuff on their phones for school- especially the cooking class when they were doing English foods like Spotted Dick and Bangers & Mash. That was hilarious.

LOL about the cats :)

Large breeds are a trick, aren't they?  When I had my first big dog, a Dobermann, I was counseled to feed her as much meat as possible early on, theory being she needed the protein, because large breeds grow rapidly and they need the nutritional support of high protein.  She grew large, was the best dog I've ever owned, and died at the age of 5 from liver cirrhosis.  It about broke my heart.  I always wondered if I killed her by not feeding her a more balanced diet early on.

It is accepted truth that Toy breeds live longer than larger breeds, and that may be true, but is it because, as you point out, the large breeds are pushed to grow more, faster?  Could be.

Danes, I've been told, die younger due to several factors, not the least of which is their hearts are challenged by sustaining a much larger body - yet I have not heard of Irish Wolfhounds dying at the average age of 7 ...
As with everything a balanced diet of good food is the key. I had a lab that lived for 16 years. He ate ol'Roy for his first 8 then I switched to a no grain diet his last 8. He was put to sleep because of arthritis was real bad. Hardest thing I've ever done. Best dog I have ever had . He didn't need a leash. Never went very far , If we were not hunting.

Oh congratulations! I just saw that you are quitting. Yes, now, you will taste, smell, and breath easier. Just keep reminding yourself of that hike you will do the next time SCG comes to visit. You will love being able to go..go..go.. Happy for you and your DH. :)

Wolfie, you have me curious now-- you listed pheonix. My son saw a silver pheonix bantam yesterday and is DYING to get pheonix. Even started coops drawings. Do you pic of the pheonix?? I need to do MY research as a mom too. lol
I'm having phone issues again as far as getting pics and I need them. I donated some chicks last year from my Goldens so that's what I'm posting. He's been doing really well with them at the smaller shows. I hope they do well for him with the bigger shows.

These are a few months old and they were pretty young. My birds are LF not bantams. They really aren't very big as LF to me, although I did see a dinky bantam roo. The LF eggs are small, so I can only image what the bantams lay. LOL

I also have Silvers, which is my preferred color. Once I saw how well he was doing with the Goldens I decided I better hold on to what I have and raise some of those too. LOL

I still have moments when my body says. "If I was still smoking, I would have one right now." It happens at the strangest, most random times, too. Anything that has that much control over your mind and body is to be avoided like the plague!

I still have those moments, too, and I quit 02.13.2002. I have no actual desire to smoke, just a hankering to do something with my hands, or mouth. I chew a lot of gum, still. Funny how I still remember that date like it was yesterday but I have to think about when I got married, or divorced, or even BF's birthday.

Same internet filters at my work. Had to get an "exception" to be able to view a website on treatments for various types of cancer (oh the horror - breast cancer, anal cancer, testicular cancer...).

I also made the (completely innocent, really) mistake of googling "how to clean your hood" and was shocked at what came up that wasn't blocked. What I was trying to do was put together a power point presentation for my new technicians on how to clean an IV room's laminar flow hood and I needed pictures, but not those pictures.

Alice was the epitomy of the perfect housekeeper in a perfect world.

We have the luxury of domestic help in the Philippines. Our kids have a nanny each and we have a cook/housekeeper. All three combined could not beat Alice.

The salaries are minimal compared to USA and we pay well above minumums.

Regardless, it makes life so much easier and allows us to concentrate on the important things with our kids.

Its going to be a real shock when we finally get to bring them to USA.
