The Old Folks Home

see the difference between the store egg and the home grown one?
Kinda ;)
My girls' eggs used to look like the "home grown" ones but after they stopped laying for the season I switched to the cheaper food (same feed mill). $10/50 pounds for the cheaper layer, $13/50 pounds for the stuff with marigold extract to make darker yolks. There is no other difference in the 2 varieties. I didn't know that marigold extract was so expensive!

I found vitamin supplements were what oomphed the egg color in mine.
(Omega Egg Maker by Manna Pro added to their chopped salad along with a little Calf Manna)

Our feed is expensive out here at the feed stores, so last go-round I shopped the Black Friday sale at Chewy.com and got a Buy 2/Get 1 Free deal on high protein pellets, which brought the price per bag down to reasonableness. (They'll probably have something similar after Christmas.) I didn't envy the poor delivery driver dropping off a couple hundred pounds of feed to my doorstep, though.

Are the protein pellets chicken feed? I assume they consist of grain rather then leafy greens? Just curious. I like them eating healthy because the nutrition comes back to me 😊
For many years people talked about the cholesterol in eggs. My Dr says an egg a day is very good for you regardless of cholesterol because it's packed with nutrients. I'm supposed to eat less protein but eat high quality protein. I guess that's why I let them have alfalfa hay when they can't have much grass. It may be more expensive, but I only have 6 chickens and maybe I will get some thing good from them.
I always think if a chick can survive off an egg yolk without other food while traveling through the mail, there really must be something good in an egg!

calf mana is a supplement not a feed so is added sparingly.

lovesfarms -- By protein pellets, I mean high protein chicken feed (but not grower; a layer feed or feather fixer.) Somewhere in the 20-22% range. Calf Manna logs in at 25%, but is mixed into low-protein chopped salad/leftovers that the chickens get. It has been my go-to fixer for all farm animals.

Alfalfa is great for chickens and turkeys! When I raised table birds I made sure in their finishing weeks they had a flake of alfalfa to eat as it is an antioxidant and tends to really make the flavor pop fresh. Just make sure to add free-choice grit or you may end up with impacted crop.

Thank you for the info!
