The Old Folks Home

Well, I have to get the 3-4 chicks this spring to begin with. (Hubby is on board with this.) We'll see how that goes. I foresee two scenarios.

1: My plan goes well. (broody hen, TSC get Blue Aussies, seamless integration) I think getting chicks is a snap! Ooooo... can we do it again???? Nope, I'm out of room! Thinking of ways to enlarge coop/run for spring 2022.

2: Problems with plan. Hen doesn't go broody; have to brood indoors. Integration is difficult. I go bald from tearing out my hair. I think getting chicks this year was a disaster! But.... maybe I did it wrong and should try again! Hubby reminds me how upset I was/how poorly everything went. 2022 comes along and I have amnesia about the previous experience.

Meanwhile back in Missouri....IT'S FREAKING COLD!

Seriously cold! So cold that the chickens look out the open door and say 'no way in hades I'm going out there!'. Can't say as I blame them. I'm going to have to start swapping out water bowls because the ice build up is just getting too thick to deal with. Everyone clusters around the bowl waiting for me to come and hammer out the latest offering of ice cubes. I dip out said ice cubes, add boiling hot water from the stove and they hurry up and drink before it freezes again. Got the feeling I'm going to have a lot of roosters with frost bite. Danged big combs anyway! Who needs them! grumble grumble grumble.

No real break for us until this time next week.

It sounds like it is very cold there!

Sure is Ron. Low tonight -4 and -11 for Sunday night. We have wind chill warnings out for -21.

I won't get mad if all of you out there in sunny California point to the east and laugh your heads off at us.

Today I said to my husband 'tell me again what our reason was for selling the Florida property?'

He just said yeah, bad decision.

It is a trade off! Mild winters and very hot summers compared to very cold winters and milder summer.

Stay warm!

50 here, but a slight drizzle with it..
On another note, this young fella hatched yesterday with curled toes and legs that just didn't want to function properly.. I've been giving him B-1 + in water every few hours.. he likes drinking little drops off my finger or the dropper itself.. 36 hours and the toes are getting straighter and he's more upright in the leg department. I'm super happy about that, so the weather takes backseat for now!
