Why was it postponed?
I believe that it was postponed due to not enough chickens to give away. Oz had a large batch of eggs incubating that were affected by a power outage during the cyclone that hit the PI. Those eggs were to be the chickens that were going to be given away during the mission.
thats exactly right
we lost well over a 100 eggs in the bator. I thought I could recover but then they great molt of 2013 hit and I was down to 3 eggs a day
I added 30 mins of light a week ago and am up to 24-30 eggs a day
we have around 130 eggs in the bator, I will hatch out around 150-180 crosses for the mission - then cull to 30 trios - 90 total. The birds will be 6-7 months and producing.
If I gave away teenagers the may not make it to point of lay
Ron - Would love to see you on that TOFH trip to Coco Beach, too! As I would Arielle and all the rest. I guess I have to stop calling people out sometime, I just didn't want anyone to feel left out if I didn't mention them by name. Irealize now that I can't possibly name all of my friends here so I will just say "EVERYBODY, think about it and let's do this!"
I have tried several times to raise poults. Each time they did great until 3-6 months when they dropped dead. Then, last summer, I had a bout of losing chickens that had even the state lab stumped. Through my own research, I guessed that it was a Blackhead overload that was killing my chickens and treated them. I stopped losing birds in August, soon after I began treating them, but it was already slacking off when I started meds, so I am not certain if it was the meds, the issue had run it's course, or the fact that the weather had gotten drier.
Try treating them for Blackhead at each season change this year and try Turkeys again next year.Ron - Would love to see you on that TOFH trip to Coco Beach, too! As I would Arielle and all the rest.
