The Old Folks Home

We use a nurse practitioner mostly, have found her to be more knowledgeable than most doctors around here. Good doctors don't IMHO have practices in rural areas, no $ to be made there. Important stuff we travel.
Emergency rooms are about worthless local here also, minor stitches or a cold might be worth the trip, anything more might as well drive a hr. They don't even deliver babies or set minor broke bones anymore.

I once had a lady vet who had poly cystic ovarian disease and went into the hospital to have wedge resections done on her ovaries so so she could get pregnant.

It was her first surgery and afterwards she told me, I can't believe we do spays on female dogs and don't give them pain meds afterwards. I don't care what they say it freaking hurts and from now on, my dog patients are getting pain meds!

Sometimes experience is the best teacher.

When we retired we tried to find a new grad to take over our practice for us. We were told that most coming out of college are facing over 250,000$ of student loans.

Being good has nothing to do with it. The money they have to pay back for their education is driving them to where the money is, mainly big cities.

When Obamacare came into existence, a patient asked us if it was going to effect private practices and I just smiled and told them that I hoped they enjoyed driving to a big city for care because doctors can't afford to run a practice in a small town and be able to pay operating costs with what the insurance companies are paying them on Obamacare. Survival means big multi doctor practices that can see multiple patients at a time.

Being my husband's office manager and office nurse was a real eye opener for me. People have no idea how much it costs to run a medical practice.

The cost is astounding.
