The Old Folks Home

Do you think that will help his neck, @CapricornFarm? Don't have any vitamin E on hand but can pick up some tomorrow at the pharmacy. He's getting sunflower seed so that should cover the selenium.

He had very deep gouge wounds in his neck. If I knew which rooster/s did it to him that would be it for them. I didn't see any bone or torn muscles but that doesn't mean there wasn't muscle damage.

I've put my finger under his beak and forced him to move his head vertically. Seems like he can do it. Hoping it's just the pain from the injury that is holding him back.

My biggest problem is what to do with the young roosters that are causing the trouble. I'd butcher them but they are half Fayoumi which means they don't have a lot of meat on their bones to make them worth the hassle.

Speaking of neck wounds. Found one of my 7 week olds on the ground not moving much. She's the one that always runs up to me for lovin'. Saw a nasty puncture wound on her neck right behind her head. I was sick, she's my favorite. So, I dressed the wound first with bag balm, and spoon fed her electrolites. Second day added a drop of colloidal silver to her dose of electrolites and some on her neck.. Third day the same.. Today just electrolites. I was so overjoyed to see her attempting to eat today. She's wobbly and slow, but is actually getting some food finally.

And today, after 4 days without food.

I gots to get me some of that colloidal silver, @CSolis. That wound looks about as bad as Swans neck did when I found him about 6 days ago.

Do you get yours on Amazon or do you have another source?

That is a remarkable recovery.

The day I found Swan was one of our hottest days. I don't have any idea how long he was outside before I found him. What surprised me was that he was one of the boys who didn't fight with the others. Just sort of minded his own business.

Do you think your little girl was pecked on by a larger hen?

Just google colloidal silver and plenty of sites pop up, A friend of mine in Seattle told me she doctored her cat with it and had amazing results.
I'm not sure what happened. These chicks are in a turnout pen all by themselves. She's seems to have significant nerve damage or swelling close to the brain if not the brain itself. I won't make any decisions until I see she can't survive with her peers, but I'm hoping for a full recovery.

On another note.. Baby Jay followed me out on to the front deck today. I've been encouraging him to eat from his dish instead of me shoving in his mouth. Yesterday was a show when he spotted a fly. His flight skills are amazing as he can do a 180 in mid air now. He follows me all over the house. So, he spend a few minutes on the deck railing and took off for the big oak tree. I could hear him calling. About 4 hours later I went out and called him. He sat on a big branch over the house then came back down to the railing. I walked in the door and zoom he came after me, crying for food.. Momma feed me! He was a hungry boy. When he was done getting his groceries he went down to the floor and was just a chattering away, I looked and he was telling Gator all about his adventure outside.

Yes, vitamin deficiencies can cause neurological problems. Would not hurt to give a multivitamin for birds.

Glad she is making progress!

I'm not sure at this point if he has a vitamin deficiency or problems resulting from the injury to the base of his head. Could there be nerve damage? Probably. It was a deep wound. Actually two wounds. Imagine him being grabbed by his neck by a larger rooster, the flesh gouged out twice. There was a lot of missing tissue. More than a centimeter. Closer to two centimeters in size. I didn't witness the fight. Wish I had. The rooster or roosters responsible would have been the first to reach Mars without a spaceship.

I still have him on antibiotics to cover the healing of his neck and his eye. But I'll add some rooster booster to his water also.

The way he holds his head though I seriously think he has sustained some neurological damage of some sort.

I'll see if I can't get some pictures of him tomorrow.

90° weather and I've got a bird with diarrhea. She drank and drank all day. She didn't pass blood, just all water. She had no appetite until tonight she started scratching and pecking in the dirt. Bad timing with a hot week ahead of us.
Give her a bit of dry oatmeal just set it let her peck at it

I really feel for ya @microchick . It's been a helpless feeling here with my girl, but she polished off her scrambled eggs, which means she found them. Both eyes are open now so she must have some sight..and she poooooooooooped! I've never been so happy to see chicken poop, which means 4 days literally on just electrolites didn't cause permanent damage there. And yes there has to be nerve damage. B vitamins are key for nerve health. I wish you luck with your boy.

Good Morning, OF
