The Old Folks Home

The guy used to approach me and tell me what I can and can't do but if DH came around, he would disappear. This morning I was in the yard and out of the corner of my eye I noticed the neighbor kept walking back and forth looking in my directions. I got shaky in my shoes cause that's how he acts when he's ready to run over and tell me what to do. Then I realized the surveyors were here! Then his wife, on her porch called way across my (big) yard to the surveyors in friendly fashion. Really odd! I wouldn't even call to her that far away. I was in the chicken house and as soon as I came out she went inside. I asked the surveyors not to share information with them. Surveying is expensive! And I was told to get a certificate made in preparation for a disagreement
i had an experience like that when i was a city dweller and lived next door to the neighbor from hell.

he was always stirring up trouble and arguing property lines with me until I had my land surveyed. Yep, expensive. over a thousand dollars 20 years ago.

surveyor came to the house just laughing his head off telling me i had ruined that guys day. seems like ten foot of his garage, gas meter, drive way fence and yard were on my property.

this guy was such an a** that I relished telling him he had two choices. by the property from me or start ripping stuff down. plus pay the surveyor charges and closing fees.

came out almost 3000 dollars richer and relished making the idiot pay for it.

he stayed the neighbor from hell unfortunately until I moved to be with dh

sorry about the typos and lower case. last night i was petting varn and for some reason diesel took offense to it and didn't want varn near me. They have been getting along beautifully as of late so I told diesel no and in an instant they grumbled and game on with my right arm between them. came out with two very large skin tears and worse of all two puncture wounds on my wrist from varn. they weren't aiming for me but one another and i was just collateral damage. my right hand is almost useless today though so i am taking it easy. close as i can figure, one got one side of my arm and the other got what was left.

one of those times having prescription pain med and antibiotics on hand is blessing.

Did you do it on your own or have someone helping you?

In our county, the fence has to be so many feet back from the property line, as well as having a permit. The surveyor should put stakes, or markers, so the property lines are marked. Here, you can complain to Code Enforcement too. They will come check permits, and make sure the fence is placed where it should be, or make them move the fence. There should be an equivalent agency for those that break the zoning rules.
Thank you for this info. I don't sleep well last night, I just found out the lawyer couldn't help us and I got a little over whelmed

I am a non-confrontational person too. I am so glad we get along with all the neighbors back here. Like I tell every one of them, we (collectively) are the first line of defense back here. I can be there long before the cops/paramedics/fire department.

No, I can't be or do the job of the cops/paramedics/fire department, but I will help any way I can. Implied with that is, let's all get along, for everyone's sake.

@lovesfarms, I'm sorry you are dealing with this problem.
Thank you for being that kind of person, that's what I wish for here as well.

I haven't mentioned anything to them, of course they can see the markers. I just needed to think it over and ask advice because I want no fights! He had mowed 6 feet over on our property this week and she used the weed eater down to bare soil around my bushes and along the wall. Now that the markers are there if they do it again, it will be trespassing? I was mowing today.

You sold the land too cheap, it would have cost him a ton to remove/modify buildings.

Now that the markers are there if they do it again, it will be trespassing?
Yes, maybe a few posts a few inches in from the property line with "No Trespassing" signs are in order. Make sure you know EXACTLY where the markers are. I don't know about where you are but here it is illegal to touch an official survey marker. That doesn't mean they don't sometimes "go missing".

By the way, once you have the survey registered with the town I believe you are within your rights to remove any of their fence that is on your property. Of course it would be best to give them a chance to move it first.

After their fence is gone/moved you might want to plant a hedge or something along the property line. Depending on the plant you might need to put them a few feet from the line as the neighbor is within their rights to cut any part of the plant on their side of the line.

As others said, I'm sorry you have to deal with these people.

Probably but I was trying to get him to be a better neighbor. Besides, it was the price that the real estate agent suggested along with the money I had to spend to have the property surveyed.

Looking back, he continued to be a pain in my backside so yeah, sorry I didn't make him tear it all down, lol.

I can actually reach the shift key now so hand isn't quite as painful. Yay.
