The Old Folks Home

Morning all. Sitting here with coffee mug in hand trying to get my eyes to focus.

@CapricornFarm, that is one gorgeous bird.

@pennyJo1960 good luck on the quest for replacement hens. It's a bite that you lost three but good that you have resources that enable you to replace them this time of the year.

17° here currently up to 42° today. I'd say things look promising but nope. Storm heading in on Tuesday/Wednesday with more snow so no nets are going up yet. My poor birds haven't been outside for so long that once the pop doors get open their reaction should be priceless.

Those pop doors may be frozen shut!
Thanks Becky. I sure love these birds.

I was tempted to open the pop door for them today. The sun is so pleasant, but the wind out of the southwest is down right cold. So they are going to have to be happy with the sun coming in the window.

@bruceha2000 last year after two or three weeks of snow and cold the temps suddenly went up, the snow melted and the girls started laying. They laid for about 10 days, then the first of Feb, the temps took a nose dive and the snow came back. When that happened they stopped laying again.

My youngest hens are 2 years old now. Some are 4 and the rest are 3 so I know their production is going to drop off. I'm planning on putting bantam eggs in the incubator come the first of April and debating on hatching Fayoumis eggs after that. The thing with the EFs besides their resistance to disease is that they don't flood you with eggs.

On the other hand I could get a dozen Amish barnyard eggs and hatch them but frankly, I've fallen in love with the EFs.
