The Old Folks Home

I have lived a bit north of Fort Bragg for over 26 years, and I grew up in northern Indiana, and all of my DD's were born in MI. I have been called a '**** Yankee' by some of the locals because I will not move back north again.

I may not have had any Silver Campine eggs lately but I got something near as good.

My imported egg BBS Orpingtons laid eggs. I then incubated them and I have local BBS Orpington Babies. Barred Rocks are pipping and RIR are due in 4 days!!
Congrats! Pic's please?

Next week some of my babies will be here RIR, Lt. Brahmas, Buff Orps. I can hardly wait!

Good morning all. Morning to do list done.

Laundry in process
Sheets changed
Bed made
Dogs out for run
Eggs steaming for snacks and such
House tidy (not clean, that is for weekends only)
Coffee in hand with a quiet few minutes before the rest of the family gets up and rolling.
I love my quiet times to do my stuff in the morning, in the spring and summer I am out gardening already. but right now I have to wait..sigh.

This weekend is the beginning of spring cleaning for us. It takes a long time to get everything just right, but in the end it is wonderful to have the house, yard, shop, greenhouse, chicken yard and coop and even the trucks and cars clean and fresh.

This year we are painting the living room, office and hallway again. I painted the bathrooms and bedrooms and kitchen last year so they are still nice. (one bathroom needs a little touch up due to a dog scratching panic attack, she got herself shut up in the bathroom by herself somehow and had a fit (goofy dog). Anyway it will be a project to get everything done for the next few months but at the end of spring it is wonderful to sit out on the porch in the morning before work and at the end of the day and look at all the flowers and such...my muscles are burning just thinking about it..(in a good way..lol)

Do you all have Spring cleaning fever yet?

I love it!

Thanks for the laugh.
Oz, I was wondering if you were familiar with this Vietnamese chicken. They're looking for partners to export it to other countries.
The chicken pics start around the 1 minute mark.

I thought I would throw out a few photos of the "seasonal" creek on my property since we got some rain up here.

Beautiful. Nice bridge. I grew up on a farm with streams like that. I wish I still had pictures.
I didn't plan well and am still in the burbs rather than on a property like yours.
Enjoy!!

Yes, but I'm afraid I may be cured by the time spring arrives.

blythspirit, funny, I was just looking at my drawers and closet and thinking it's time to take some clothing to Goodwill again. Did a partial exchange of the deep litter in pens and coop already, that was last weekend, don't want to dig up beds in windy weather which we are likely to have the next few days, but I scored a nice wooden box yesterday, about 2.5 or 3 feet wide, at least 3 feet tall, by almost 6 feet long that will be a coop for a pair of birds, so I'm going to try and get that done this weekend, just needs a roof and a pop door. Will go inside a chain link run and be occupied by a pair of Cochins I'm borrowing back from a friend for a little while. I gave them to her as chicks, they turned out really nice, Black male, Mottled female, LF. She doesn't keep them separate and I'd like some purebred chicks.

Have chicks due to hatch tomorrow and again Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (tomorrow's are local and I set on Saturdays, the others were shipped and I didn't want to hold them, so will have two hatchers running for a few days).

So far I've been very lucky, I've been able to sell any chicks I don't want to keep and grow out, in fact last week's hatch was sold before they pipped to someone with two broodies and no fertile eggs; they had been sitting 3-5 weeks and she wanted to give them day-olds to raise - which they are doing masterfully :) Love broodies.

ChickenCanoe - obviously I didn't understand a word, but those legs - is that what they are supposed to look like? They look terrifying to me, but often things we aren't accustomed to look scary until we understand them.

If you two figure out how to make this happen, count me in! (Unless of course it's illegal, then I will have to publicly decline in which case, PM me.)

Hey Wisher:

Have you got any Silver Campine eggs lately?

I have really been surprised at how elated I have been over this one egg. You'd never guess that I have had chickens since I was in single digit age! I have been grinning and floating around a foot above ground for two days. I guess that's when you know that your "hobby" has advanced into the "passion" category. Thank you to all that have been keeping it fresh with comments like those above (and DiDi's below)......ya'll rock!

EXACTLY!! I'm sure it is the same feeling! It is the tangible proof, sitting in your hand, that all your dreaming, researching, planning, hard work, setbacks, mistakes, recoveries, and progress, has finally paid off! It's a great feeling - and a wonderful reward for all that effort! I hope that feeling never goes away for you, my friend.

Hey I hear that Wisher doesn't get white eggs every day but when she does, they are Silver Campine eggs

Linda those shots of your little creek are just beautiful!

Linda! Wow! Those pictures are pretty enough to decorate the walls of the cabin! I would love to see some when the spring flowers start coming out! Maybe with some chickens walking about.........

This is part of the correspondence about those weird chickens.

"~very special and rare bred of poultry that can be found nowhere but here, in Vietnam. Being of great interests to the crown prince of Imperial Japan as well as experts in animal husbandry from Austria and Belgium, this is Dong Tao chicken also known as “tribute chicken for the kings”, originating from the township of Dong Tao, Khoai Chau county, Hung Yen province of Vietnam. In Vietnam, these chickens are known in the local legends as one of the rarest and best tributes that are paid to the kings every year. Famous for the extraordinary pillar-like legs, which were usually compared to “dragon legs”, with deep red color of meat like that of beef and the crispy sweet skin once cooked. Quite large in comparison with other type of chickens, the male specimen can weigh up to 6 kg and 3-4 kg for the female.. One of the 5-stars ranked chief of the US once stated “This species is the most delicious chicken I've ever processed and enjoyed.” And now, we would like to introduce this special species to the whole world, with the hope of establishing co-operations with international organizations to develop and breed this valuable type of chicken."

Apparently they want $2,500 a pair.
