Thank goodness someone was awake. Surprised a breaker wasn't tripped.A few days ago, we put in a new microwave. Dd #1 walked into the kitchen, and the old microwave went on by itself. She tried turning it off, but it wouldn't. In a little bit, it began to smoke, and it turned off, but kept heating. She woke me, and I unplugged it. After awhile it cooled down. It's a good thing it's summer, and they were all up later than usual. It saved us from a fire.
Dh did some checking, and after a bit of digging, it's a known problem. They sell a part for $150.00 to fix the problem. I have no idea why the fix wasn't free, since it's a known problem, and FIRE HAZARD, or why we weren't contacted, or sent a notice, or something. What part of FIRE HAZARD didn't sink in to the manufacturer? It's not like it didn't have the potential of burning up someone's kitchen, house, etc.
Fortunately, Lowes was having a 4th. of July sale on the ones that matched the rest of my appliances, so it cost $250.00, instead of double that.
Right, thought that's what breakers were all about. Maybe as they age they become ineffective. That's scary.pert, Dh said the same thing, that the breaker should have tripped, BUT it didn't.
