The Old Folks Home

Wish it would cool down here. My parents flew in today, and while they came from Virginia and are enjoying a break from the heat they're used to, I'm dying. They went to bed early, and I stayed up and canned some blackberry jam. Just came out. My two loaves of bread are about to go in the oven (my parents destroyed the loaf I made yesterday) and it feels like it's about 30598 degrees in my kitchen right now.

THe temps dropped here with the front, maybe it will reach you and get the temps down.

My house is running at 80, because I'm always cooking and have heat lampson the the new chicks. Nice to be able to turn off the heat lamp at 2 weeks old.

I can smell the bread from here!! Delicious!! Seems your parents enjoyed it, demolishing the first loaf. Nothing like fresh bread!!

Yeah it actually caused a fight with my dad (who is a very large, food obsessed man) telling my mom that she needs to make bread at home...

PS (now that my enter key is working again, I hate cooking with my laptop on the counter... need a keyboard cover STAT!) what are you cooking?

I made pot roast this evening. We also had boiled potatoes, steamed broccoli, fresh corn, peas, and brownies. My oldest said, "Is today a holiday?" Then the youngest came in from church and said. "Who's coming to dinner?" The middle one made the (boxed) brownies and peeled potatoes for me. It was a good day.

The oldest two are grounded because they got into a fist fight while I was at work last week. The youngest one told on them. I like it when they are grounded. I get my flower beds weeded!

My goodness, I am off the site for only a day and a half and you all become a bunch of chatty Cathy's

I got lucky Friday morning because I forgot to close the gate to the chicken run the night before. I think this is the first time in two years that I have had chickens that this has happened. Thursday when I got home, I knew I was coming down with something and I just hurried through the last bit of chores that DH hadn't done for me (I was so greatful that he had done most of it already) and when I was done, I just went inside without looking at the pen. The next morning when I went out to feed the horses, there were groups of chickens roaming about. I looked over at the pen and sure enough, the gate was wide open. I did a quick headcount and got very lucky. They were all there. I haven't lost any more since not letting them out too early or when we are not home. Saturday I had to drive an hour and a half each way but I scored some really good mixed hay. I could only fit 63 bales in my truck and trailer but they have a couple more fields to mow before the end of summer. I will keep my eyes open for their ad. The barn is filling up but I will have to make a few more runs before I am fully stocked. Have I mentioned recently how backwards this state is?

Oh wow and... what a great idea for grounding!

My dad informed me that my roosters started crowing at 3:05 this morning.

He said if he were my neighbors he'd kill me. Maybe I should bring them some eggs and jam today.

We're thrilled that the temps here have gone to the low 90's instead of the low 100's, but the humidity is so bad.

I tried a new recipe yesterday, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia. I used snapper instead and served it with wild rice and steamed vegetables.

Wisher1000, if you run out of chores before the sentence is over , send them my way.

SCG---I specialized in making homemade breads for most of my life just so I could eat delicious breads--unfortuantely that also turned me into a pig, LOL, on many levels. So out with the breads and potatos, and most grains. Just meat and vegies now, and wow do I feel energized!!

Wisher-- Grounded to do the weeding--hmm, wonder if my two will keep a pack and not tell me. Though I can usually hear at this point, arguing then whispers. I suspect they are plotting to avoid Mom's wrath.

Stumpy--Parmesan crusted Talapia--now THAT I can eat!! Recipe please!

dsqard-- good score on that hay!

Wisher, I have to say that the best punishment I doled out to DD when she was young was to make her sweep the runway at work. She had gotten in trouble at the after school program and I had to go and pick her up. I handed her a broom and made her sweep for quite a while. She never got in trouble after school again and remembers that to this day.

Arielle, I have learned from prior years to start stocking up as early as possible. This year has been very dry so I know I better get the majority of my hay shopping done now. I can still be choosy at this point. There was mixed hay closer to me but they were charging almost twice the amount so driving the extra half hour to get this other really good hay was definitely worth it. I probably have about 2/3 of what I will need for winter. Of course I will have to restock the stuff that I am using now but I think I will be able to have around 300 bales by the end of September. I wish I had a bigger trailer. I would have picked up 100 bales of the mixed on Saturday. Nice, fresh mix and heavy bales too.

I'm hoping the hay supply will be good now that the rains have some, of course it rains a little or a lot every night. The grass grows but harvesting is tricky.

ANyone see pics of the Mars landing last night?? Someone posted a pic on another thread thank goodness; I have dial up and could not get the live feed last night. Thrilling!

I let out a batch of shicks to free range today. THe first ones out were the buff Orpingtons. Good little free rangers they are. Turkey poults gathered together and didn't move!
