The Old Folks Home

Yah gastric torsion is nothing to fool with. Back in the 70's vets advised NOT to feed dry food and then let the dog tank up on water. I used to let the feed soak a bit first and then would wait 2 hours before putting the water bowls out.

Of course that was in the stone age. I would imagine vets know lot more now.
That's still a good idea. The bigger the breed, the bigger the risk. The better half usually tells people not to do heavy exercise with the dogs half an hour before eating or two hours after eating, especially with bigger dogs.

@subhanalah No, that's just her breakfast, raw pork (or chicken) and veggies, don't remember which she got yesterday for brekkie. She was fine once we got it out, and luckily the chicken feed was already mash when she ate it, so it didn't swell that much anymore.

If you ever need to get a dog to vomit, mix salt with a dash of water, and form a paste of it. Then force the dog to eat a bit of it (a ball about the size of your thumb for a medium sized dog), and a moment later, be ready with something to catch with. Or then you can just use apomorphine, but I think salt is the easier route to take.

here, you can buy syrup of ipecac which I THINK you can use it for dogs.
Do you use that stuff over there?

Whoa...just did a Google search for "apomorphine" dude, are you giving your dog your antidepressants?

Haven't heard of that. Vet's use apomorphine, and a home remedy which works is salt. I'd be a bit worried with this stuff:
" Ipecac root itself is a poison, but in this diluted form, its ability to induce immediate vomiting means that the syrup is seldom fatal."
Doesn't sound very promising.
that's how I feel about apomorphine!

Okay, so I read the actual wiki, instead of just the Google page...
Why would a doctor prescribe a medication that's going to make you sick?

Well, don't know about human use, but when your dog has eaten something poisonous (and non corrosive), it's the easiest way to get it out. Poisonous plants are a good example. And another is eating too much of something.

Historically, apomorphine has been tried for a variety of uses including psychiatrictreatment of homosexuality in the early 20th century, and more recently in treatingerectile dysfunction. Currently, apomorphine is used in the treatment ofParkinson's disease. It is a potent emetic(i.e., it induces vomiting) and should not be administered without an antiemetic such as domperidone. The emetic properties of apomorphine are exploited in veterinary medicine to induce therapeutic emesis in canines that have recently ingested toxic or foreign substances.

Old folks break dancing? Sounds like a recipe for a round of "I've fallen and I can't get up!"

I think we may have gotten our first double yolker today. Veera was spending a pretty long time in the nest box again today, I just went to check what she had left behind, and found the biggest egg we've gotten so far. The previous record was 36g, and today's egg was an actual small egg at 47 grams!

All of these firsts seem to happen when Karin is away, so maybe our EE and Marans will still start laying this weekend too.
