The Old Folks Home

What is the giant bird she is carrying?

That's a young seagull. Fully grown, but not in adult feathering yet. The earlier pic shows her with a crow. They had managed to find some monster seagulls for this test. I saw one that had to have a wingspan of 1.5 meters (5 feet).

Wow! Your seagulls are not our seagulls.

Im planning a coop for about 20 chickens. I have 2x4s, plywood, and 3 sheets of metal roofing. Anybody have any good ideas or pics?

I'd make something along the lines of a 8x12 walk in coop. Maybe external egg collection hatches to allow kids to fetch eggs easily. Deep litter on dirt floor (or a slightly raised linoleum/blackjack 57 floor). Lean-to roof, and maybe separate a part of one of the 8 foot walls for storage. I can think of loads of more things if you like.

All the wonderful pics here on BYC! Go look through the coop pages!

But, personally, I can't understand how people manage to have storage space in their coop. Me, I am very much "must have more chicken space" ( say that in a zombie like tone)

Quote: In a walk in coop, you could have hanging cabinets on the wall. Chickens fit under them, and your not taking away their floor space. I made some external storage space on mine above the egg nests. I don't see the point in having external egg nests with empty space above.

*Edit* Actually, I think it was even larger now that I think about it. Maybe 6 feet.

Stole the words right out of my mouth (or keyboard).

Our gulls congregate in the large parking lots of the big box stores here and they are very bold trying to steal food. I can't imagine what that would be like if they had a 6 foot wingspan.

Anyone here do any trapping (legally) for furs and meat? I started a trapping class last night but I'm not sure it's for me. Either way, I'm going to finish it because I started it and because I want to learn new skills that I don't have...

Quote: Our's like parking lots at McDonald's and other fast food establishments. A veterinarian on TV has coined the phrase "mäkkärivaris" (Mickey Dee's crow) to describe malnourished birds living in urban environments. It's not a very balanced diet to eat discarded fries as your main source of nourishment. The seagulls also like open air restaurants. They're not so bad in those settings though, the worst part is when their baby birds are learning to fly and walk around somewhere. If I see a baby seagull somewhere, I've learned to run quickly. Mama bird can get super violent. I was once chased around a huge office building by one who kept swooping for my head. Scary stuff. Think "Birds" by Hitchcock.

SCG, I forgot to reply to the second part. I once caught a hedgehog with my own homemade trap. I was maybe 10 years old, and my trap was built using a upside down metal basket suspended by a stick. There was a string which was tied to the middle of the stick in one end, and to the "roof" of the cage from the other. In the middle of the string, I hung a piece of sausage. This type of trap worked perfectly, although I did release the hedgehog instead of making a cool cactus hat out of him.
