The Old Folks Home

My modern freezer is usually afflicted by ice accumulating on the coils. The air flow is then blocked and the freezer gets warm and beeps until we defrost it. This occirs at least monthly in the warm humid SE US. It is a piece of junk. A good defrosting could not hurt it.

Actually, YES!! it turns out that some scum had formed over the drain, so the water couldn't drain, and there is a crack. I still am not sure how to get rid of the water that got into the insulation under that crack...but now, totally empty, it works just great.

So..I think another day, and we can fill 'er back up! :ya ( by the way, :hugs that you are saddled with such a temperamental freezer :sick )

Now.... Cuteness:

700

25 of them. :love

It's pine shavings. I start them on paper towels and sprinkle feed on the towels till they know what food is and then move them to shavings.

I think there are 44 chicks in that picture. Every once in a while one escapes into an adjacent stall with older birds.

They range from 2 days to one month.

Ooooo! I didn't see the roosting bar you have there. That is soooo neat!

Alaskan, nice to hear you got it working. When did you last defrost it?

Those baby quail do have a pretty cool pattern to them.

What? Defrost? Huh? Didn't I get an auto-defrost?

Huh? Am I supposed to do cleaning or maintenance? Again, huh?

Me do no do such thing called "cleaning" or "maintenance" I do not know these words that you use.

@ozexpat dang! Your quail are cuter! Wonder if it is because you got the quail all bunched up, standing on their eggs, or in that bright basket. Maybe all three. hummmm.

How many do you have in there?

So far, all 25 are going strong! However, one child LEFT THE DOOR OPEN! As in, they left the door to the toy room open, and the spouse walked in and saw the mass of chicks. Bummer dude.

Luckily, the child that noticed this potential tragedy is a smart child, and kept babbling on about the cute and adorable qualities of the tiny itsy bitsy quail. In conclusion, NO, neither the quail, nor myself, were thrown outside into the cold.

This is a very good thing, because even though it is quite warm today, as it has been for the past 3 days, I SAW YELLOW LEAVES TODAY!

So yes, it has been warm and dry, for three days in a row, and I couldn't find the paint brushes, I looked everywhere! I will have to buy more tomorrow.

Checked again today, and still no more mice. Yay! Bought some smaller (8 quart) buckets for water in the coops. Sunday I hope to begin worming them all. When the worming is over, I'll put the larger bucket back in with the adult trio.

Went to Toys R Us, and spent a small fortune for my granddaughter's birthday presents for tomorrow. She's all into the movie Frozen. Apparently, so are most other girls her age. They have trouble keeping enough Frozen items in stock, and most of it is expensive. To be honest, the barbie type Frozen dolls are ugly. I guess there must be something wrong with me when I expect a much prettier doll for $32.99 each.

Went out yesterday evening to discover a huge softshell snapping turtle next to the driveway. Several of our neighbors said they too had seen them in their yards. We had a bad storm yesterday, with hail, and lightening hit the lake at least twice, so I guess they headed for higher ground. They seem to have returned to the lake today, and are settled back down.
