The Old Folks Home

Cyn, congrats, thats a cute baby

Tnspurs, sounds goog then, still hoping to hear that everything went fine

Alaskan, yeah, the 'reindeerpissing' is one of my favorite units of measure too

Oz, often feel like you've been duped?

Wisher, but your temps resemble hades

She woke up for a bit, tried to sip some sprite and immediately upchucked it. Poor Pie. She so tried not to get it on the blanket. I grabbed the wash tub thing just in time. She was so groggy and out of it. She didn't stay awake long. DD is staying the night at the hospital. I do have some pics to post and I promise I will in a bit. Right now eating Wendy's and watching Spiderman. Yes I brought my apple tv device on this trip.

Thanx for the prayers and good energy. Love you guys.

I am off tomorrow.
I am going to try to catch up on my projects.

**Put hens and chicks in the tractor
**Redesign the auto-feeder
**Cull down SC pullets by about half
**Select SC spring breeder cockerels
**Set up nest box in new pen
**Set up grit/shell feeders
**Take lots of pictures!

We'll see what gets done.......... It's awful hot out.........

How are you going to cull, with them all so young? I was trying to cull, and then I went and posted pictures of the cockerels, and all those people convinced me that you just can't cull so young, they change so very much...blah blah blah.

But, I keep looking at those extra never-gonna-lay-an-egg beaks that I am feeding...and I wonder...

Hard to choose though, the one with both best color and comb (by a long shot on both) is also a slower maturer and at present is still a bit thin in the body and tail. The one with the meatiest body and nice well spaced legs has the worst comb as well as bad color.

I would really like to not overwinter all 6 of that breed.

Trying to catch up.

Congrats Cynthia

Hugs and well wishes for Maddy.

In the Philippines we buy rope by the dupa - the length from the sellers left nipple to the tip of his right hand. I try to avoid short salesmen.

In Bali the traditional architect designs your house based on the length of your tibia and radius.

Thanks Oz! that is fun! So in Bali, each person's house is based on the house owner's tibia and radius? Or the builder's?

This antique measurement stuff is fun.

Quote: I feel you dude! In central Texas right now we have 100-102 degrees with a heat index, because of the humidity, of 105! Birthday suits? Yes, and like Marilyn used to say when asked what she wore to bed....."Only Chanel #5." But for me it is old lady talcum powder so one doesn't feel sticky.

Talcum powder is the only way to make it in Texas with no AC. You take a bath, then powder yourself all over. That way you get to feel clean and dry for a full hour!

Of course, my mother would correct me and say "No dear, we always had AC. You just take the top sheet on the bed and fluff it twice before you go to sleep. That is AC."

@tnspursfan09

well, so far so good!

The swelling hasn't really started yet. That will be the next few days. But she's in her room with as much of her stuff as the hospital will allow and mama's with her and she doing great.

Well, that was a bit of a scare. I heard a horrible commotion from the yard, and quickly went to check, what do I see? A northern goshawk bashing around in our yard. I yelled at it a bit, and it took off. The older ones had all found shelter, but I found the Sussex roo hiding under our cabinet shed with quite a lot of feathers strewn on the ground around it. He was a bit shaken, but didn't appear to have any wounds. The Sussex pullet was nowhere to be seen though, so I locked up the rest of the flock, and took out Kiusa and we went looking. The dog found her in about 2 minutes, hiding outside our yard in some bushes and under some rocks. There were some feathers there too, but she seems to be fine, although a bit nervous. It seems that with them being a bit clumsy, they make for a pretty easy target. No unsupervised yard time for the chickens in a while. And finding lost chickens is a lot easier with a trained hunting dog, let me tell you that. It will be interesting to see what this does to egg laying. Viiru was happily unaware of anything in the egg nest during the attack, so we might at least get one egg today.

We have red tails and coopers who nest in the woods near my yard. We lost one of our buff orp girls. Pretty sure it was one of the ted tails. The pullet was young - just four months old - but she was big. I'm glad you found yours.

I think I'm going to leave a dog out with the chickens in the future if leaving them alone in the yard. Hopefully that will discourage the hawk from trying for an easy meal. I'm not ready to confine them completely, that seems more cruel than to loose a chicken occasionally. I'm going to have to check on the rooster properly a bit later, he was trying to go into the nestboxes with the girls, hopefully he's just a bit shaken.

I would never leave a dog unsupervised with the chickens. That is just asking for trouble.
