Interesting observation. maybe it takes more time for the veins to grow to the otherside of the egg?

Always something to worry about! I hope they are cooking along just fine--I want to see chicks in a few weeks.

This may be a dumb question, but are you raising the emus for meat? It would be so interesting to have such large birds.

We have ended up with way to many males... so yeah.. a few will end up going to freezer camp.. but that won't be until sometime next summer
A few are definitely "pets" though... so they are safe!

FUnny the logic behind who is allowed and who is not!!! My muscovey drake chases my turkey toms, so they are minus most of their tail feathers !! HeeheeI'm sure the puppy needs time to grow up and become confident before tackling a large bird. ALways about balance.

Yeah. she was the runt of her litter.. the breeder gave her to us for free since her mother pretty much abandoned her. I doubt she will ever get as big as our pyr.. For now she needs a big confidence boost

I went out and candled my two peafowl eggs. I have movement in both! One just sort of swayed a bit but the other was cuttin' flips! They don't look like the chicken eggs that I have candled before. They seem to be developing all on one side of the egg, along the long axis. Is that normal? Is it possible that she is not turning them enough? The air cells look good, maybe a bit big, and the veins, black dots, and shadowy places are all on one side of the egg. Should I go out and turn them? Yinepu, HEEEEELP!

They are on day 8 and the veins were easy to see and the eye (I guess) is quite dark. There is a well defined shadowy mass to one side and I think I saw the yolk on the other side.

I have had goose eggs like that.. seemed all the developing was on one side of the egg and not the other... til a few weeks in.. then the rest of the egg showed veins .. they hatched out just fine too!
I remember reading a study where the average hen turns eggs at least 96 times a day.. if you also want to give them a half turn go for it! Just make sure you don't bump them around too much in the process.. but at 8 days I wouldn't worry about them at all.. they still have plenty of time to develop.. just remember they take longer to grow than a chicken embryo.. so their development will be a bit slower than what you are used to seeing

Okay, so my egg-candling photography skills leave some to be desired!

It was way past bedtime for me and the chickens. I enlisted DS#1 whose striped bathrobe you may be able to see in some of the pics. It was really dark and the only light we had was the flashlight we used to candle. The birds looked as if saying, "What are you up to noooowww, please just leave us alone!"

Do your chickens poo on you intentionally or is it just mine? I swear, they hold it until I am directly under them, then let it go. Three got me last night, in different areas of the coop.

Most of mine are very thoughtful and won't go on me, although there are exceptions. I also have a few lap chickens that jump right up on my lap, and hold it, too, while they get petted. However, they usually seem to have the worst case of poofoot I've ever seen before they decide to snuggle. One will jump up on my shoulder during the winter and ride around (we call this the mobile heated roost) and this necessitates a lot of jacket washing. She's a sweetheart.
