The Old Folks Home

Quote: x2 Momma will do all the work if you leave enough food and water out. I had to put out a pie pan for the poults as they were to small for the dish pan of water. But momma did all the work. Give her some nesting material hay or grass or shavings and let her be.

I had a big day.

I cleaned out both pens in the breeder barn (two coops to go) and refilled with plenty of shavings. I cleaned the feeders and waterers and refilled them.

I helped DH cut down two huge dead pines that I was afraid were going to fall on my breeder barn, one almost did! I realized after they fell that they were not going to fall any time soon, they were solid in the trunks.

I put some large logs in the goat pen for them to play on. Two of them I stood up on end and one I laid on it's side in front of them. I also put a 2x8 against one of them like a ramp and a wooden spool at the back as a step up to the top which is about 3 1/2 feet tall. They wasted no time jumping on it to explore.

I wormed 1/4 of my Silver Campines before it got too dark to see.

I enjoyed it but, of course, I threw out my back. I'm off to take a couple of Motrins, a hot shower, and then to bed.

'Night, all!

@superchemicalgirl i did one zoom through Main many years back, I obviously missed all the good stuff. Thanks so much for the pictures, it was a grat "armchair vacation"

Me......worked like a dog all day long (i did break for lunch, and then stopped for church...evening prayers...MAN was I happy that it was time for church, I might have collapsed if I had kept working)

Anyway, we got 4 posts sunk and supposedly in the right spots and the right heights  out of 6 that we need to make the coop frame.

Dang blasted things are NOT as stable as I would like. The soil is a bit damp and mushy, easy to dig in and....the perfect spot to build a new tower of Pizza.

I am hoping that when I nail them all together, that it will stabilize.

I also can't figure out how to connect my 4x4 posts to my super long cedar horizontal. The cedar horizontal is , I think 4x6, but it is from a log home kit, so it has the groves on the top and bottom, the 4inch sides.

A super long 6 inch screw/bolt? A 2x4 that is screwed into the cedar horizontal and the 4x4? Some U shaped metal strap thing?

Not sure....looooooooooooost ...............

Also wondering if I can take an old crank window that opens like a door, and install it like an awning window. Wonder if doing that would result in broken glass and a broken cranking mechanism, or if it would work, as long as I only open it a tiny bit when it is snowing.

Cement them in? I did that for posts here.

But I would have to buy cement.

I am REALLY trying not to spend money.

I do have one bag of tile grout......... I don't think I could get that to work for even 4 of the posts.

You don't think that with the posts nailed together with boards, that they will be strong enough? I have 3 feet of post in the ground, for less than 5 feet above the ground, at least for the corners. My two middle posts are not that good. :/

They would be fine in certain types of soil. It sounds like your soil may not hold up well.

Too bad you do not live close to a home depot. They sell cement already mixed with sand--you just pour half a bag around the post in the hole and add water. You only need to put cement in half of the hole and then cover with dirt. Each bag is not too expensive and can work for 2 or so post holes.
