The Old Folks Home

Went to the coop this afternoon to find a three month old chick in the nest box, mostly eaten. It's head, back, and legs were intact. The breast and neck meat as well as all internal organs were gone. It was evidently caught inside the coop (during daytime) and carried out the pop door and into the nest box which is accessed through the run. Whatever it was also had a fresh egg while it was there as I found an egg shell that had a quarter sized hole in one side but the contents were gone.

What do you think? 'Possum or coon?

Sorry about that. It's a horrific find.
I still can't get over opening a different coop every morning, day after day, and finding all dead and not eaten at all.

My guess is possum. Coons usually start at the head.

I had a craving... Fresh pumpkin loaf!!

I thought about deleting my post but I knew the total weight of the OFH would go down quite a few pounds so I did it for everyone's welfare.

It was worse to actually see it. The roundworms came pouring out as well so I kept it on the fire and under the grill cover. Hopefully there was nothing left viable in the parasitic realm. It first went into the pullet pen and they really piled on, grabbing bits of meat and chasing each other around for them.

Nah, I kept eating my tuna sandwich... ;)

Sorry about you hen Wisher.... Also sorry about you having lurking predator :(

What did you do with the scallop squash Bama? If you had a bunch bet you could make a killer spicy relish.

Oh and I learned something today...
Ducks can't see in the dark... At all. And neither can I .... And carrying ducks in the dark in the rain to put them away is a bad idea.... Remembering it gets dark early is important. ;)
