The Old Folks Home

Chickens are staying locked up today. All of the wild birds are chirping like crazy, and the hawk was swooping around when we did some morning chores with the chickens. Didn't get a clear view of it, it's using the sun pretty efficiently, but Karin briefly saw it and it was flying like a hawk. I just saw it's shadow swoop over the yard a couple of times and heard it screech.

Interesting, USA has a population density of about 30 people per square kilometer versus Finlands 16. I think we have cell coverage in about 99% of the country. Even in the archipelago I usually get LTE.
the USA has a higher average but greater extremes. where deb lives 1 repeater tower would serve 6 people.

most people use hard lines (DSL, cable, f/o) for their high bandwidth internet and phones when they are out of the house/office. In Asia and lots of Europe, the main infrastucture for internet is via cell towers

Yeah, Lapland is where our worst covered areas would be too, less than 2 people per square kilometer there. And they do have a few cities too, so when you go out into the boonies, it gets really sparsely populated. Probably a similar situation. No point in giving high speed internet if your only customers are reindeer.

Well now we know why I only see the same 10 people... Perhaps there is some plot a foot created by the Canadian government... Early stages of some Tim Hortons world domination program....

( the coffees not that good, shhhh don't tell the others )

Ok clearly I need to go to bed

Sorry, Dunkin is going to take over the world. I'm not sure why we in New England require 3 DD in every square mile but I can't say I'm not happily caffeinated.

Not sure what kind of a run you have but for my hawk problems I string up a cats cradle of fishing line across the top of the run because it is way too big for a net. All different kinds of directions, it's a mess. But, I think it slows down the hawks/eagles because I never lose birds to aerial predators when I have it up. And it does fall down after a few months - snow/ice are hard on it as are my dingbat birds who insist on flying out every day to explore and then fly back in and snap lines in the process. I've had to untangle a few legs and wings from the fishing line when I get home but haven't had any amputations or deaths, luckily. I know it doesn't stop the predators 100% but I think it slows them down enough so my birds can scatter and run under the coop for protection.

Quote: The run isn't all that big, but it's a solid hunk of junk, with a proper roof. They are just confined to the run now, normally we let them range in the yard (and they let themselves range outside of the yard, which was probably why the hawk got Viiru). I was thinking of maybe suspending some fishing lines across the yard in the trees, but that would look pretty ugly, and I wouldn't get it dense enough to make a difference, I think.

Big round hay bales around here are being wrapped with green netting. Im going to find out more about it. Im thinking it comes on a long roll. Im pretty sure its inexpensive because the cost of hay bales hasnt increased since they started using it. It may be the perfect thing to cover runs with

Bama, can't find a price for it, but it seems to come in a couple of sizes, about 2-3 miles per roll

The stuff is 4 feet wide, has a breaking point of 270kg, so about the same as paracord (550lbs).

Hennible,  make an apt with an eye doctor,  I think your' eye 'has a cataract or glaucoma

She has been to the human eye doctor diva there's nothing that can be done for it, it's not a cataract it's a scar from being stabbed in the eye by another cats claws... Currently she's not in pain so I'm gonna leave it alone but I can have it removed if it ever starts to bother her..... for a lot of money

Canadian plot to take over the world: "Hello, is this President Obama? This is PM Stephen Harper. Could you open the border for our troops, please? No? Well okay then. Have a nice day. Don't forget to wear a coat, it's a bit chilly out there."

Lol

Only in California would she need to do that, I think she's self medicating already.

Back in the day, when I frequently self medicated the cat really enjoyed it too :D
