Sour, around here we call it Bois d' arc. We use the fruit to repel cockroaches and it seems fairly good repelling mosquitoes too. I've made tool handles out of the wood, darn tough stuff. The grain of the wood is reddish orange and yellow.

Horse Apple, Knobby Oak, Osage Orange - same tree, same country, so many different names. Up here they were used as hedgerow trees, closely planted to form natural fencng. Once they take root, they are lmost impossible to kill. Hard wood that will KILL a chain saw. When hunting, I would pick up several, put them in my jacket and when my BIL was not looking underhand one in front of him through the brush. He shot many an Osage orange thinking it was a rabbit. No offense meant, lady.
THanks for the clarification-- I watched all the movies with DH, but obviously can't say I am a fan. He has all the books, too, and critiqued every movie. I do remember the spider scene!!! My favorite spider is the field spider; otherwise we have a few others in the house. If they stay up high I have left them; if they are the hunting spiders and I can reach it, SPLAT!Shelob - still gives me the shivers when I think about it. You can tell which BYCers are Lord of the Rings fans. For those who aren't Shelob was an enormous spider - big enough to take on people and wrap them up tidily.

THis mock orange, or Bois d' arc, sounds like it is in the cedar family; the color and the repulsiveness to insects.
OK-- I need input!!
I'm setting SS tonight. I need to clean the eggs because the pullets done't seem to understand the benefit ( to me) of laying in the nest box instead of under their roost. I need to thoughly scrub their eggs and apply oxine or a bleach solution.
Suggestions on methods??
