The Old Folks Home

Does anyone here have any experience with halal and slaughtering? I ask because I have a Muslim customer coming next week and I want to have a proper setup.

Yeah, I've never named a chicken, or anything else I may have had to eat.

I did have a rooster with a crooked toe that I referred to as crook toe for a bit but he tasted good anyway.

No experience Kathy, but my understanding is that (at least with sheep) they are to be killed swiftly with a clean cut to the jugular, after which you let the blood drain. I haven't read much about it, but it seems quite humane really, the time the principals were developed they were the best way to not cause pain to the animal excessively and to keep the meat as fresh as possible.

We are humane here. Well the white bresse go for crow reduction surgery on the 2nd of December. The neighbors can't even hear our chickens etc.

The ayam cemani aren't even old enough to lay eggs yet, and aren't the best ac lines anyways.. ahem. This was a trial run to see if I can hack it. Freezer camp set for Wednesday.

Nugget is way too loud, but I do adore him. Dang it.

My ducks name was Beck... I ate him... I expected processing to be harder after some research... It wasn't really any harder than a chicken... Well, except for the cuteness factor...

We name and eat the named animals all the time. My kids have no problem with it.

We even ate Oma and Opa chicken (grandma and grandpa in German). They were delicious! :D

They must have been old.

Not all Muslims are strict in regards to halal but here are the basics

Avian meat, like poultry or duck, must similarly not have fed on avian meat or related by-products.

Standards in the area of slaughte:

1-Allah's (God's) name must be pronounced during slaughter. (loosely, this means that it should not be an offering to another diety. Strictly, it requires "in the name of God" uttered as you kill the animal)
2-Instrument must be very sharp to ensure humane slaughter. (the knife must not be serrated)
3-These steps must be accomplished by a Muslim. (Most clerics say it can also be performed by people of the book - Jews and Christains)

Kosher meats, which are consumed by Jews, are permitted to be eaten by strict Muslims. This is due to the similarity between both methods of slaughtering and the similar principles of kosher meat which are still observed by the observant Jews today.
