The Old Folks Home

@vehve

for what its worth Thanksgiving at our house was about the Food and Football.... When Dad and Grandpa were still kicking. After the blow out meal Ours is usually served around for a late lunch.... then there is the nap in front of the TV then every once and a while a HOOT from the only watcher wakes everyone up. Usually Grandpa he had a perverse sense of humor.... Then we have Dinner which is another blow out meal.... another nap then a Movie or more Football... By now both TVS are going.

Then we pick the turkey carcass and store the leftovers and get the table cleaned up.... After that is a Rousing game of Shanghigh or as we call it with our variation.... Rummy Dummy. Then we all would trundle back to our homes... each about five minutes from Grandmas house. Some to go bags but mostly the food is left at grandmas for the next day's go round.

Usually Sandwiches and salades and what is left of the veggie plate....

When there were five of us before my son.... We would consume a fifteen pound turkey a large bowl of Homemade potato salad a large bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy a bag of rolls Stuffing, Two cans of black olives, two cans of cranberry sauce Candied yams, Crazy beans,a Dozen deviled eggs, a half jar each Sweet pickles and Dill spears.... And a vegetable platter usually celery, carrot sticks, scallions, and radishes.

Oh and then there were the Pies.... Pumpkin, Cherry, and Pecan.... and whip cream....

Now there are four of us and I am the cook.

TG dinner will be 12 pound hen turkey, STuffed with stuffing we like Mrs Cubbisons. Which is seasoned but with added onion, celery and butter and turkey broth. I am doing Rutabegas instead of the potatoes.... very tasty. Veggie platter the same as above. Then I do make gravy but its better than grandmas... because I season stuff. And I am on the fence about the yams. They are really easy.

Twelve pounds of turkey cooks down 25 percent. So that leaves eight pounds of meat... Enough for sandwiches the next day but not boat loads. There will be dressing and Rutabegas and gravy left over... and of course the veggie platter and deviled eggs.

We will do a pie maybe two. I like a fruit pie as well as pumpkin.... Sprouts makes killer pies.

For what its worth New years dinner is about the same but we switch to ham no dressing or gravy but everything else is pretty much the same.

I would love to do a duck but Mom would soundly turn her nose up on it....

Sounds like your rendition is less fattening and a bit healthier than the original....less starches and sweets. Have to ask. Sprout pie?? Of all the things I've sprouted for my chickens, there is not one I can imagine with sugar in a pie. Please tell. Maybe it is a "good for you" dessert?

Quote: Sprouts is a grocery store.... they are mostly organic and have a good bakery. I do not make pie... never have. I could learn but I have other stuff I need to learn other than baking.

Its good for you to have dessert and not feel deprived. even if you are on a "food program". But the deal with sweets or any "redlight" food is you only have it in the house to be consumed with a purpose in mind.... Not sitting infront of the TV with a spoon and the whole pie or tub of icecream. I dont buy big containers of ice cream for that very reason..... Or cookies..or what ever.... So if I want cookies.... I go ahead and buy reallly good ones but one or two at a time....

Like for instance we were talking about biscottis I forget where .... someone said they have big tubs of them at Costco. Well while that was tempting I knew that big tub would probably last two days here. But I did go to Starbucks and pay the whopping price of 1.75 a piece for two.... and sat and ate them with my coffee....

So someone is NOT supposed to eat a whole tub of ice cream at one sitting?? Who knew?

Yep but if you eat it by the refrigerator light there are no calories.....

There are no calories:

In that corner that is sooo uneven on the cake
In food consumed over the sink.
In the bowl of Fudgy cake icing after you are done icing the cake
in a spoon of butter put in the tap ramen
food consumed in the bathroom.... Yep bathroom
Or food consume in the car... like those errant french fries
Or leveling off the top of the ... oh you name it.
and most definately No calories in food consumed when no one is looking.

Yep Yep Yep

Quote: Thanks Deb, That is two home grown broad breasted turkey one was a white the 40+ pounds and the other was a bronze 35 pounds. And we are having them cooked for us as the 40 pounder will not fit in my oven or a pan I own. lol
My problem is I always cooked to much food and had 3 fridg's to put it in after dinner. Now I only have one fridg and two freezers. lol So I cannot afford to over do it to much. And someone gave us two more turkey's today. lol They can wait till next month. We will be cooking all the fixings to go with the turkey and ham dinner and deserts. We will be making dressing, gravy, potato salad, english pea salad, lima beans, sweet potato casserole, corn soufle', green bean casserole, ham, mac-n-cheese. I can't even think of what all the kids are bringing. Pies and cookies, cakes and other deserts. I know we will have several family members staying for a few days. So lots of left overs to eat. :)

Hunting dogs NEED to have a soft mouth. In the olden days someone told me you could teach a dog not to bite down by having him fetch decoys with nails driven through them. I would think no dog would want to pick that up.

My Cocker stud dog and his son - could pick up anything, leaving nothing on it but, spit. I never taught them and they had NO hunting dogs in the background - nothing but show champions which never hunted a day in their life. I think some dogs are just naturally like that.

A half sibling Muffy, our vacuum cleaner, used to mess around with, green tomatoes my mom had ripening in a brown bag. We'd find tomatoes scattered around the house with teeth marks that didn't look like rodent damage. One day we caught her with her head in the bag picking out one. Apparently she'd realize she didn't like the taste, so she'd dump them and then go back later for another.

Soooo much to be thankful for.... Glad to know its not one whole turkey.....

Hey do you share leftovers with shelters or anything like that? Probably not with the size of your family.

Ooo lima beans.... I love em... I will have to wait for those for New Years Day... they just go hand in hand with Ham.

Have you thought of Taking the turkey to the butcher and having them band-sawed in half? I was thinking of doing this twelve pounder this time like that.... But that's at the grocery store not something raised up at home.

I also want to try my hand at boning a turkey and stuffing it and roasting it that way .... takes the bulk out of the Turkey and I could make stock out of the carcass.... After roasting it with some veggies.... Just leaving the Wings and the drumsitcks for presentation... That way you can spread the white meat out and it is supposed to cook more evenly... Maybe when I move home I will give it a try.

Deb, TG at your place sounds tasty.

Yeah, our dogs have excellent lines, loads of merits in their heritage. Not so much in ours, but even with just average training they're pretty okay.

Diva, some people use wire stuck in crows and seagulls for training (the birds are dead of course)
