RIP 1953-2021
@vehve
for what its worth Thanksgiving at our house was about the Food and Football.... When Dad and Grandpa were still kicking. After the blow out meal Ours is usually served around for a late lunch.... then there is the nap in front of the TV then every once and a while a HOOT from the only watcher wakes everyone up. Usually Grandpa he had a perverse sense of humor.... Then we have Dinner which is another blow out meal.... another nap then a Movie or more Football... By now both TVS are going.
Then we pick the turkey carcass and store the leftovers and get the table cleaned up.... After that is a Rousing game of Shanghigh or as we call it with our variation.... Rummy Dummy. Then we all would trundle back to our homes... each about five minutes from Grandmas house. Some to go bags but mostly the food is left at grandmas for the next day's go round.
Usually Sandwiches and salades and what is left of the veggie plate....
When there were five of us before my son.... We would consume a fifteen pound turkey a large bowl of Homemade potato salad a large bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy a bag of rolls Stuffing, Two cans of black olives, two cans of cranberry sauce Candied yams, Crazy beans,a Dozen deviled eggs, a half jar each Sweet pickles and Dill spears.... And a vegetable platter usually celery, carrot sticks, scallions, and radishes.
Oh and then there were the Pies.... Pumpkin, Cherry, and Pecan.... and whip cream....
Now there are four of us and I am the cook.
TG dinner will be 12 pound hen turkey, STuffed with stuffing we like Mrs Cubbisons. Which is seasoned but with added onion, celery and butter and turkey broth. I am doing Rutabegas instead of the potatoes.... very tasty. Veggie platter the same as above. Then I do make gravy but its better than grandmas... because I season stuff. And I am on the fence about the yams. They are really easy.
Twelve pounds of turkey cooks down 25 percent. So that leaves eight pounds of meat... Enough for sandwiches the next day but not boat loads. There will be dressing and Rutabegas and gravy left over... and of course the veggie platter and deviled eggs.
We will do a pie maybe two. I like a fruit pie as well as pumpkin.... Sprouts makes killer pies.
For what its worth New years dinner is about the same but we switch to ham no dressing or gravy but everything else is pretty much the same.
I would love to do a duck but Mom would soundly turn her nose up on it....
