Best diet I ever had didn't involve giving up much, but you had to change the way you consumed the combinations. NEVER combine carbs and protein in a meal, so no sandwiches or steak and potatoes. You could have protein, fat and veggies or carbs and veggies or veggies and fats. You need to be aware of just what constitutes a carb (so know your sugars and starches), a protein (meat, dairy), and fat (butters, simple salad dressings). You need to be VERY strict on the carbs/protein rule...i.e., gravy has flour in it, so a no-no with meat. And then add lots of walking, great especially before a meal. If I was bored and felt like noshing, I'd take a short walk instead and reevaluate my craving upon return home. I lost close to 60 lbs in fairly short order and never felt deprived or hungry. Lunch might be a bowl of buttered noodles, dinner of sautéed spinach with chicken livers and poached eggs.
I will say it is more difficult to diet when you're cooking for a household v. solo, especially when you're married to a gravy/bacon/mayo addict.
