Melanism occurs in just about all mammals and birds and humans.  

fibromelanosis  seems to be specifically for birds.....  there are a couple of threads here on BYC that have scientists that discuss the subject.... 

But I understand the difference between Mealinism and Fibromelanosis is Malanism effects coat only Fibromelanosis affects the bones and muscles as well.

The idea that fm chickens may be good for you might have a basis in fact. A recent study showed that the skin of dogs with dominant black coats were better able to fight off bacterial infections. Golden Retrievers are really dominant black, dobermans are not. A few breeds have recessive black (German Shepherds, etc).

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. DH and I went over to our boss' house for dinner. It was so odd not cooking. It has been years since I haven't made Thanksgiving dinner. On Friday we smoked a turkey breast and had our own small Thanksgiving. Yesterday I went out for a hike before the winter completely coops us up. I have also been working on some different sewing projects. I got all of my table runners sent out on Friday to my "pay it forward" list (something I joined on FB) and yesterday morning I finished up a smallish quilting project as my secret Santa gift.

Some of the pictures on this link have been photo shopped.... but there are alot showing examples of different breeds of chickens that have this trait. But I understand the difference between Mealinism and Fibromelanosis is Malanism effects coat only Fibromelanosis affects the bones and muscles as well.

BTW Silkeys tend to be Fibromelanistic.

Bell Canyon is about an hour away from where I live. There are a ton of hiking trails in the mountains around here. Unfortunately the trails in the mountains closest to me are closed up for the winter.
