The Old Folks Home

Today we went to Murdoch's and got 40 lbs of boss for $20 & 50 lbs cracked corn for $10. A couple of my girls are molting badly.

Tomorrow we go visit an a2a2 cow to barter with. I'm so eggcited!

I thought I had seen boss much less expensive somewhere else, but the bf insisted on going to Murdoch's.

Snow is expected tonight. fwiw my greyhounds are the kings of the sofa around here

spoilt doggies.

A local pasture raised pork roast in the pressure cooker. 3rd batch of errl made with our closed loop extraction system about to come out. Getting ready to hunker down for that snow that was water that hit California.

Tonight before bedtime I gave everyone cracked corn and then moved them all (ac & wb) up to roost in the same area, figuring the more there are huddled together the better to keep warm.

Non gmo egg nog in my coffee right now is keeping me going (caffeine, not nog.. no hooch). I didn't get around to hanging Christmas lights in the pens/coops. Dang it lol.

Grrrrrrr... Not sure which one, but at least one and possibly as many as three of my buff orps think they are sea turtles... they INSIST on burying their eggs in the coop litter instead of using the nest boxes I so graciously provided them. Could it be because I'm using deep litter and it's "warmer" than the straw in the nest boxes? I'm almost afraid of what's going to happen once the runs are finished and they can go outside and up under the coop... I am NOT looking forward to trying to retrieve eggs from under there as it's 6 feet wide by 10 feet deep and has buried hardware cloth around the 3 sides not open to the run...

It seems they also like to eat the straw from the nest boxes... when I check them in the evenings they have full/hard crops and the straw from the nest boxes slowly gets "chewed up" and disappears... It seems my white wyandottes like to eat the nest box straw as well. They all chow down in the am when I bring them their FF, eat all of it over the course of the day and none of them seem ill or worse off from their dietary supplement, but it concerns me a bit.

Any ideas how to get the girls to use the nest boxes (more regularly)? Thoughts/comments on potential dietary issues that might be causing the silly things to be eating the straw? OK, nuff about chickens, back to the normal ebb and flow in TOFH

Consider using the same litter you use in the coop in the nests? My girls ate everything I tried in the nests - except the sand I use in coop and runs. They ate shavings, shredded newspaper like popcorn. I bought those plastic turf nest box pad and they pecked those too. Nest box curtains really do help, make sure they can see in the boxes and place one fake egg in each.

Some chickens start out as coop floor layers, but most will eventually move to the nests if they are more attractive = dim and private.

Ooh I loved my Greyhound.... big ole goof... He would roll over from that comfy positoin and lay with his back on the couch his head hanging off and his feet straight up in front and his hind legs .... where ever.... Usually on a hot day.... Hed let his tongue hang out till it got dry then sputter and smak his lips to get it wet again. HE was that same color a red brindle with lots of tan.
