The Old Folks Home

Oz, if bama went to visit you, we'd all have to go help you build a chicken jail for him. LOL! Sorry to hear about those children. Yes, keep your kids away from the beach until the waters calm back down. Never go to the beach right before, or after a storm. Teach them not to swim towards shore if they ever get caught by an undertow. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until they are out of the undertow, then swim towards shore. Glad you didn't sustain too much damage from the storm. There's usually some clean up to do after a big storm, even if there is no damage.
our kids began swimming lessons at 8 months. they respect the ocean and would never go out in it without an adult present.

we had mountains of debris to clean. we had more than a ton of sugar cane alone washed up onto the beach. there were more than 100 coconut branches that fell on the property as well as barrow loads of leaves. i wish i had a chipper to turn the sugar cane into compost. it took everyday since the storm until now to clean up.

Just caught our latest weather report. Snow thru tomorrow, ok, no big deal there. However (why is there always a "however"?) then the temps take a serious nose dive Sunday night With it not getting above zero on Monday and by Monday night we should hit -30 F (or worse) with -40 F+ windchills. Ok, this isn't unheard of for us but we normally don't get this until around Valentine's Day and it only lasts for a day or two. Once this stretch kicks in we're not supposed to see daytime temps above zero till Friday. Good thing for the girls I'm mobile again. Tomorrow I need to throw some extra straw in the coop, change the woodchips on the catch board and drag out the heated waterer to put into the coop. Don't worry girls!!! You may not remember me but chickie momma won't forget you!!!

We got about 6 inches overnight and today it's going to turn to freezing rain. I am sick and tired of the ice. Temperature wise we've been fairly mild but this week we will be dipping sub zero again. Just more time to stay snuggled up!

Yep when I want to learn how to can I am getting on a canning site.

I would also suggest finding someone who knows how to can to do it with you the first time. I learn best by seeing it done after reading up on it. I found someone on the BYC Maine thread who was willing to have me come out to her house. She was very informative.

by that stage my wife would have booted the pope himself

I tell you what, I'd be afraid of Mrs Oz.

more time to snuggle up - snuggling is something we dont get to do very often. our AC is set at " i am cool if i dont move too much or touch someone" level

in hospitals we use the see one do one teach one method

Mrs Oz is a force to be reckoned with. be afraid.... be very afraid

Morning everyone!!!
Oh boy, here comes the wind

Temps are beginning to drop and now they've lowered the predicted temps for the week ahead, whoopee.
SCG- so sorry for all the ice, yuck! That is one thing we haven't had to deal with at least. Looks like we only got 4 or 5 inches of snow overnight. Actually good because it's the dry powder stuff and is drifting up everywhere.

Too bad you don't live closer Diva. I was raised in a canning family. I had to devote and entire closet to my canned goodies. Which just gave me my idea for Sunday breakfast! I need to go grab a jar of canned apple pie filling. That is just so yummy smeared over hot pancakes with just a dusting of powdered sugar and pa has to have his fresh eggs on the side of course!!! Better get busy, I just heard the snowblower shut down!!!

We are supposed to have fog today but I see a pretty pink sky as the sun is coming up.

Stay Safe!

I got everything shoveled out in about 90 minutes. I have to say this storm was a pleasure to clean up - the temperatures were cool enough to not sweat while shoveling, the ground was frozen solid, the snow was light and fluffy (even the large piles that came off the roof), gentle wind, the freezing rain hasn't started yet and the goats didn't succeed in pulling my pants down while I was shoveling them out (although they tried). BF gets to go out now and plow and then I'll have one final clean up to do after that.

We mix apple butter into our pancake mix and make apple pancakes that way, sometimes. The rustic apples with cherries and raisins that I posted earlier sometimes goes on top, too, as a warm topping.

However, this is how I prefer my apple pancakes:
Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Divide butter evenly between two 9-inch pie plates and put them in the oven to melt the butter. Coat the bottom and sides of plates.
  3. Use a 4 cup measuring cup for the mixing bowl, if available. Beat eggs, flour, milk and salt on medium speed of a mixer for 1 minute.
  4. Arrange 1/2 of the apple slices in each pan. Pour 1/2 of the egg mixture over the apple slices in each pan.
  5. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle over the batter in each pan.
  6. Bake until puffed and golden brown, 20-25 minutes.
  7. Serve immediately, while still puffy, with warm syrup

That looks so yummy! Kind of like a Dutch baby more than traditional flapjacks.

Yesterday afternoon warmed up to over 40, so I turned on the irrigation system for a little bit but reset the times for about 10 minutes per station. Didn't count on the ground being so frozen, though, that the water had no place to go. It basically slid out of the orchard and into the driveway and cul de sac.... Big ice sheet this morning. Had to place hazard cones out. Oops! Won't do that again in a hurry. It's supposed to heat up from 20 this morning to 48 this afternoon....hope the ice melts and goes deep into the dirt.
